THURSDAY COMMENTARY – DOG DAYS OF SPRING

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)

REALLY, NOW, WE’RE JUST FILLING TIME.

FOR ALL MY YEARS, THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE “SUCKIEST” TIME OF YEAR.

DEPENDING WHERE YOU ARE, THE SNOW ISN’T TOTALLY GONE AND THE FARMERS ARE STILL WEEKS AWAY FROM GETTING INTO THE FIELD.

FOR MANY IN SASKATCHEWAN THERE ARE TWO SEASONS – RIDER SEASON, AND WINTER. WE’RE STILL WEEKS AWAY FROM FOOTBALL TOO.

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE, SPRING IS MY FAVOURITE TIME OF YEAR BECAUSE IT MEANS STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS BUT WE’RE NOT QUITE THERE YET EITHER!

AND IF YOUR JUNIOR TEAM’S SEASON IS OVER – LIKE MINE – THESE CAN ADD UP TO SOME LONG DAYS.

A COWBOY TOLD ME ON THE WEEKEND THAT “NOBODY CARES ABOUT THE NBA” AND IT SURE SEEMS IN WESTERN CANADA, THAT HE’S RIGHT.

I DID WATCH SOME OF THE RAPTORS PLAYOFF GAME WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND IT WAS A THRILLER – GOING TO OVERTIME – BUT THEY WOUND UP LOSING 104-101 AND ARE NOW DOWN 0-3 TO THE 76ERS.

SO MUCH FOR THAT.

ONE THING WE DO CARE ABOUT IS THE BLUE JAYS, WHEN THEY’RE WINNING. FORTUNATELY THIS TORONTO TEAM IS ONE THAT WINS MORE THAN THEY LOSE AND THEY SPANKED BOSTON 6-1 LAST NIGHT.

THE JAYS AND YANKEES ARE TIED FOR FIRST IN THE A-L EAST WITH IDENTICAL 7-5 RECORDS AND THIS WILL BE A FUN RACE TO WATCH FROM NOW TILL SEPTEMBER.

BUT REALLY, LET’S JUST HIT THE ICE.

WITH BOTH THE FLAMES AND OILERS HEADED TO THE POSTSEASON AND THE ONLY THING REMAINING IS THEIR OPPONENTS, ALBERTA IS THE PLACE TO BE IN THE HOCKEY WORLD.

HURRY UP AND LET THE GAMES BEGIN.
