WEDNESDAY COMMENTARY – NOTHING BETTER
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)
JOHN DENVER SANG “SOME DAYS ARE DIAMONDS, SOME DAYS ARE STONES.”
TUESDAY WAS DEFINITELY A DIAMOND.
WHERE TO START? WELL HOW ABOUT HERE IN CALGARY WHERE THE FLAMES SHUTOUT DALLAS 1-0 IN GAME 1 OF THEIR STANLEY CUP FIRST ROUND SERIES.
BEFORE THE GAME IN THE PRESS BOX, THE FLAMES PR STAFF SAID TO ME, “WE WANTED TO GET YOU INTO THE BUILDING TO EXPERIENCE IT. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO AN NHL PLAYOFF GAME BEFORE?”
I HAD TO THINK FOR A MINUTE, AND FINALLY ANSWERED. “NO, I DON’T THINK SO.”
I MEAN, WHY WOULD I?
(TURNS OUT I WAS ACTUALLY AT A PAIR OF STARS/OILERS GAMES IN EDMONTON IN 1997. A LIFETIME AGO)
THIS HAS BEEN SO GREAT.
MEANWHILE THE CFL COLLEGE DRAFT AND GLOBAL DRAFT BOTH WENT ON TUESDAY AND THE ROUGHRIDERS WALKED AWAY WITH 11 NEW PLAYERS (8 IN THE COLLEGE DRAFT & 3 MORE FROM AROUND THE WORLD).
THE BREAKDOWN IS TWO RECEIVERS – INCLUDING FIRST ROUND PICK SAMUEL EMILUS OF MONTREAL VIA LOUISIANA TECH – FOUR DB’S, TWO O-LINEMEN AND THREE LINEBACKERS. THEIR LAST PICK WAS REGINA RAMS RECEIVER RILEY BOERSMA.
IT’S ALWAYS AN EXCITING DAY FOR THESE YOUNG MEN, AND THE TEAMS. NOW WE WON’T KNOW HOW THEY FARED FOR A FEW YEARS’ TIME.
AND LASTLY, THE HOCKEY GODS HAVE THE SJHL FINAL GOING SEVEN GAMES. I WROTE ON THE WEEKEND THAT THIS MAY BE THE BEST S-J FINAL EVER, AND IT APPEARS TO BE.
FLIN FLON BOMBED ESTEVAN 6-1 TUESDAY NIGHT AT WHITNEY FORUM AND NOW THE SJHL CHAMPIONSHIP WILL BE DECIDED FRIDAY NIGHT AT ESTEVAN’S AFFINITY PLACE IN GAME 7.
COULD YOU ASK FOR ANYTHING BETTER?
