MONDAY RUNDOWN: NICHOLLS, SIMMER & BLACK MONDAY IN VEGAS

We kicked off a brand new week with Episode #757 of The RP Show live from the Beach House in Pompano Beach, FL with some great NHL guests and breaking news! Read on for the rundown:

  • RP and Moose Dupont got things going with The Warmup covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Weekend NHL leftovers and Seventh Heaven, 2) Round 2 Stanley Cup Playoff predictions, 3) The Blue Jays drop the rubber match of their series in Tampa Bay, 3-0, 4) The CFL strike is ON, 5) Drew Brees teases coming out of retirement after being let go by NBC, and 6) Junior hockey playoff recap.
  • On the CFL strike, RP wondered aloud why no one is referring to it as such. Viewers and Moose explained that “work stoppage” is now the more politically correct term! The panel kicked the story around for a good deal of time admitting that they don’t know who to believe in all the media coverage.
  • Kings & Rangers great Bernie Nicholls joined the show for his weekly Bet Regal spot and Broadway Bernie correctly predicted seven of eight Round 1 outcomes. His Round 2 predictions are identical to Rod’s: Panthers, Hurricanes, Avalanche and Flames.
  • In Hour 2 we were joined by Kings & Bruins great – and former Flames colour analyst – Charlie Simmer from Austin, TX. Rod explained that Charlie was the “Sam Malone of the 1980s NHL” and the pair dissected Round 1 of the NHL Playoffs however Simmer was non-committal on picking winners in Round 2. However he said bettors should be wary of the St. Louis Blues. Simmer was 1/3 of the famed Triple Crown line in L.A. along with Marcel Dionne and Dave Taylor. Rod mentioned that Regina Pats phenom Connor Bedard has been compared to Dionne and Charlie quipped, “I hope he’s taller than Marcel!”
  • The weekend sports recap included Buffalo and Toronto being up 1-0 in the Best of 3 NLL Conference Finals and weekend CPL scores which included Forge 1 Atletico 1, Pacific 2 Edmonton 1, Wanderers 2 Cavalry 2 and Valour 1 York 0. They also previewed Monday’s Game 6 in the WHL series between the Winterhawks and Thunderbirds in Seattle.
  • Breaking news came down during the show that the Vegas Golden Knights have fired head coach Peter Deboer. Being Rod’s favourite team, the host said he knew someone was going to get fired but didn’t expect it to be Deboer. The panel also debated the hiring of Lane Lambert as the new head coach of the New York Islanders.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Who will win the Round 2 series between Edmonton and Calgary? At press time over 65% of respondents opted for the Flames.
  • Friday’s Rockstar of the Day for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions was Justin Dunk. Monday’s was Charlie Simmer!
