FRIDAY COMMENTARY – BACK TO THE FUTURE

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)

WE CLOSE THE WEEK WITH ANOTHER FUN EDITION OF THE GOOD, THE GREAT, AND THE UGLY.

FIRST, THE GOOD: WEEK 2 IN THE CFL PRESEASON OPENS, AND CLOSES, WITH FOUR GAMES TONIGHT.

THE SLATE INCLUDES OTTAWA AT MONTREAL, HAMILTON AT TORONTO, CALGARY AT EDMONTON AND SASK AT BC. THE RIDERS AND LIONS WILL BE ON TV.

AFTER A SPRING OF UNREST, THE CFL IS PLAYING, AND THAT’S GOOD FOR MANY REASONS. BUT WE’LL REVISIT THAT IN A MINUTE.

NEXT, THE GREAT: IT’S A RARITY CAUSED BY COVID, BUT LET’S ENJOY THE FACT THE WHL FINAL WILL BE PLAYED IN JUNE FOLLOWED BY THE MEMORIAL CUP IN SAINT JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK LATER THIS MONTH.

WHY DOES THIS MAKE ME SO HAPPY? MORE HOCKEY.

FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW, IT’S THE EDMONTON OIL KINGS HOME TO THE SEATTLE THUNDERBIRDS TONIGHT IN GAME 1 AT ROGERS ARENA.

A PORTION OF THE SERIES WILL BE TELEVISED ON TSN. CHECK YOUR CHANNEL GUIDE FOR GAME TIMES AND BROADCASTS!

AND LASTLY, THE UGLY: AND FOR THAT, WE REVISIT THE CFL PRESEASON AGAIN.

IT USED TO BE THAT THE VETERAN STARS WOULD PLAY IN EXHIBITION GAME 2 BUT BO LEVI WON’T PLAY FOR CALGARY TONIGHT AND ZACH COLLAROS DIDN’T TAKE ONE SNAP FOR WINNIPEG THIS PRESEASON.

IT’S UGLY THAT RECOGNIZABLE STARS AREN’T PLAYING IN CFL PRESEASON GAMES. MY FIRST INCLINATION WOULD BE TO ASK, “SO WHY WOULD I BUY A TICKET TO WATCH?”

BUT EDMONTON ELKS PRESIDENT VICTOR CUI SEEMS TO HAVE FIGURED THAT ANSWER OUT BY MAKING TONIGHT’S HOME GAME AGAINST THE STAMPS THEIR “STAND WITH UKRAINE” GAME.

ALL TICKETS FOR THE GAME ARE JUST 15-DOLLARS AND PROCEEDS ARE BEING TURNED OVER TO THE EFFORT.

THE ELKS HAVE ALSO ENLISTED THE HELP OF EDMONTON SPORTS ICONS WARREN MOON AND PAUL COFFEY TO PROMOTE THE GAME ON SOCIAL MEDIA.

VICTOR KNOWS THAT TO GET PEOPLE INTO THE GAME, IT ISN’T NECESSARILY ABOUT THE GAME. AND A HUGE CROWD IS EXPECTED TONIGHT AT COMMONWEALTH STADIUM.

HATS OFF TO MR. CUI, WHO SEEMS TO BE DRAGGING THE CFL KICKING AND SCREAMING BACK TO THE FUTURE.

THAT’S TODAY’S ROD PEDERSEN COMMENTARY

(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm ET on Game+ TV across Canada and the USA. Call your cable provider for details. You can also watch on YouTube Live or listen 24/7 at RodPedersen.com/ListenLive)

Considering Saskatchewan could double as little Ukraine one would think the Roughriders would have lead the charge?

Full price preseason scrimmage tickets? Just bottom line greed.

It’s like Waylon sang about the same old tune/fiddle and guitar…….we need a change.

I agree. Awful they missed an opportunity to help an important cause, promote the team and some for-sure newcomers (i.e. at RB and QB), create some goodwill following a volatile offseason. Not sure what is going on at Riderville these days but Mr. Cui has been a major breath of fresh air.

Agree with all these comments. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Accountants should never be allowed to run ANY organization! Let alone a professional football organization. They’re not trained in anything other than counting money, which they’re needed for and are very good at. Craig Reynolds should never have been hired. Look at the revenue pre-covid……$38 and $40 million!! Where is it all? Do the math.

They don’t know how to work with people, just money. Therefore Edmonton will have ÷30,000 fans in seats tonight…….Riders? 10
