WEDNESDAY COMMENTARY – WE HAVE A NEW #1

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)

It went so well on Tuesday – let’s do it again today; The Good, The Great & The Ugly!

First, the good: As we talk about so much here, everything depends on your perspective.

So from mine, it was really good to see two Sask boys in the starting lineup for the Seattle Kraken Tuesday night in Calgary, with Jordan Eberle and Jaden Schwartz on the wings of star rookie centre Matty Beniers.

And wouldn’t you know it, the line scored the game-winning goal of a 5-4 Seattle victory, punctuating an epic Flames collapse.

How do you give up a 4-on-1 in a 4-4 game in today’s NHL? Today’s Flames practice should be interesting.

Next, the great: The Edmonton Oilers have become my top team in the NHL. At least the Western Conference. The Oil beat Calgary in the Battle of Alberta Saturday night, as part of their current five-game winning streak.

Tuesday night in a 7-4 home win over Nashville, McDavid, Draisaitl and Kane and it’s nice to see their smiles have returned.

For now at least, Edmonton is the top team in Alberta, and Canada.

And lasty, the ugly: I’m sure you came here today to get my take on the Riders firing all their offensive coaches on Tuesday, while the President, GM & head coach kept their jobs.

Hey – I wasn’t advocating for Craig Dickenson to be turfed because I love him personally and professionally but a season-ending 7-game losing streak and missing the playoffs is a mighty flop.

So they’ve pointed the finger at two assistant coaches on expiring contracts and a coordinator who was likely to leave anyway?

And they still don’t have a quarterback?

Forget about football – these guys running the Riders should consider a career in sales!

That’s IF you’re buying what they’re selling.

Which I’m not.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

Jordan Eberle plays the same as he did with the Pats – full out, full tilt, hardest working guy on every shift. He should be Seattle’s Captain. If you get the NHL package that’s the late game worth PVR’ing. Saskatchewan Roughriders: Stockholm Syndrome: It occurs when hostages or abuse victims bond with their captors or abusers. You can pinpoint the moment the Rider’s season went off the rails. Labour Day Classic with two minutes left to go. The Riders were in a position to run the ball, run down the clock, maybe score a TD but at least set up a chip shot field goal to take the lead and score a W over a juggernaut Winnipeg team at home. We all remember the asinine play call and interception that killed that drive. And two plays later, Garrett Marino makes incidental contact with Zac Collaros on a play with no penalty flags and the Riders cut… Read more »

You’re not wrong, but not necessarily right. When Garrett Marino did his deal and a professional team had to #weapologize4everyperceivedslight and that slime at the Leader Post was writing about this – we then dropped our pass rush. When he got a suspension and didn’t appeal it which is his right under the CFLPA; they were done. Then you add in all the penalties – I long said that’s either conditioning and/or coaching. Either they are so out of shape/tired they take the short cut OR the coaching staff can’t or will not teach proper technique. Bottom line – stats… Read more »

Guess who called for that asinine play? Maas should have been fired right then and there and we might still have a QB.

Agreed. Perhaps TD Atlantic as well……2 minutes to go, up by 2 points, pass play called instead of running Morrow (who had a solid game), pick six, game over. Two unbelievably bad calls cost two wins. And no business losing at HOME to a very bad Elks team and in Hamilton to a bad Cats team. There you have it. Four wins that should have been, 10-8, in the playoffs. Bad play calling, bad game management. Einstein: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Craig and Jeremy ain’t got it…….two years of knowing… Read more »

Maas’s refusal to run the ball when it was the smartest thing to do …cost this team ..MULTIPLE times.
Craig’s complete abdication of the offence to Maas was a huge part of the problem.
JO did nothing to improve our oline since 2021….actually made it worse by signing Na’ty Rodgers and then keeping him on the roster for 10 games…made no sense. Evan Johnson ….our weakest link on the interior of the oline for 2 years….never benched.
But…..this was all Cody’s fault……Laughable.
