It’s Random Thoughts Wednesday! Let’s have a look …

#1 – God bless the local sports fans. They’re already salivating over Sunday’s Labour Day Classic 61 featuring the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Saskatchewan Roughriders but there’s plenty of juicy stuff between now and then. But I’ll save you the time — we’re picking the Riders to win.

#2 – There might be a decent crowd tonight in the Regina Brandt Centre as the Regina Pats welcome the Moose Jaw Warriors in WHL preseason play. After some sniffing around,  I quickly learned the Pats are expected to win the Eastern pennant. Their star young pair of forwards Maddox Schultz and Liam Pue are the talk of hockey and tonight’s a good chance to watch ‘em live. But the window is small. Those two won’t be around long before bolting to the NCAA.

#3 – I’ll be at the game tonight – likely in the press box – covering the game for the Moose Jaw Express newspaper. I met with them on Tuesday and wouldn’t you know it; they’re having a tough time finding writers. As luck would have it, I know a thing or two about it and a deal was quickly struck.

Not sure what’s wrong the kids these days – the wannabe media stars – but I’ll take a few extra bucks and a free seat at the games if nobody else will. What’s not to love?

#4 – Tony Romo pleaded No Contest to his DUI charge from earlier this summer and los his license for six months. The NFL On CBS analyst and former Dallas Cowboy issued a statement saying he’s suffered from pain medication addiction which led to alcohol dependency. It’s a tale as old as time – especially in sports – but these stories have different endings these days. Hopefully he gets back on the air soon, but only after he gets the proper care he needs.

#5 – Spent Tuesday evening at a barbecue with sports fans and my word, were they ever rabid about those Blue Jays. Like, breathless with every pitch. Turns out Toronto got bombed in Cleveland 6-1 and have fallen 2.5-games off the pace for a wildcard spot and remain last place in the AL East.

But hey, it was fun to watch the fans! I didn’t want to spoil their fun with a dose of reality.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
