TUESDAY COMMENTARY – TIME MARCHES ON
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 FM & LTD Radio)
It’s Tuesday and that means it’s time for another edition of the Good, Great & the Ugly!
First the good: The Toronto Maple Leafs have been good for awhile but new GM Brad Treliving is planning on pushing them to great by signing some tough vets who can score over the weekend like Max Domi, Tyler Bertuzzi, Ryan Reaves and defenceman John Klingberg.
Right now, I’d have to say, the Leafs are winning free agency despite the splashy moves by Carolina which include snagging arguably the #1 player on the market; defenceman Dmitry Orlov, keeping their goalies and adding Michael Bunting.
Something still sticks in my mind though, that this is Domi’s seventh team. Why does no one want to keep him?
Next the Great: It’s getting great in Major League Baseball and while Canadians are getting fed up with the Blue Jays, at least we’re watching all the games and are invested.
The team sits two games out of a wildcard spot here on Independence Day and the second half promises to provide thrill-a-minute entertainment.
I’m old enough to remember the Jays being 20 games out by the All Star break – for a generation – so I’m taking nothing for granted now.
And finally the Ugly: It’s the Edmonton Elks.
And it ain’t close.
I can’t imagine the angst within the walls of Commonwealth Stadium these days as Chris Jones’ club fell to 0-4 Friday night with a 26-7 loss at Ottawa.
They’re getting worse and have a merry-go-round of quarterbacks; none of whom have inspired confidence that they have the foggiest clue how to lead this team out of the wilderness.
I see pundits comparing these Elks to the 2011 BC Lions who started the season 0-5 and rallied to win the Grey Cup. But you need to stop; those Lions had Travis Lulay at quarterback. When you have a quarterback – especially one like the Red Rifle – you have a chance, but Edmonton doesn’t have that.
It appears to be a big ol’ Free Space on the bingo card for the Roughriders when the two teams meet Thursday night at Mosaic Stadium.
I’d love to be there to see how it all unfolds but I’ll be in Charlotte, North Carolina calling games for USA Football at their national championships.
Time marches on.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary
(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm ET on Game+ TV, WQEE, Podcast & YouTube Live)
Well it’s glaryingly obvious. The 2011 BC Lions are same as the 2001 Stampeders. The common thread. Wally Buono running a football program. When I watch USFL the league owns the teams and the teams take on the moniker of the old USFL. They play in 3 city hubs. Skip Holtz got the same resources as every other guy same as Bob Stoops over in the XFL with Arlington. It is not an accident when certain guys win over and over. This 100 players a year for Chris Jones is a mess. Added to which the CEO of the team… Read more »
Not even the “Elks” want to be called the “Elks”.
Such a sad story ….. NOT!!
