COMMENTARY – CFL ON THE BEACH
(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 & LTD Radio)
A coupla three or four thoughts headed into the weekend!
#1 – There was a knock on my door the other day and when I answered, the delivery man had a huge box with the sender listed as being the CFL.
Inside was a boatload of goodies including a couple New Era ball caps, a bucket hat, a football, travel mug, an official Guide & Record book and a hand-written note from the P.R. staff.
They should know that they don’t have to buy my loyalty – they already have it – but this was an uber-nice touch! Thank you.
#2 – I would’ve taken this stance regardless of the gift basket; the CFL Players Association launched a complaint against the CFL this week for not postponing Monday’s Labour Day Classic in Calgary due to poor air quality from forest fires.
I read the comments from both sides and summed it up this way:
If you were that concerned fellas, you should’ve refused to take the field.
Sorry.
#3 – This is why they play the games. The Detroit Lions went into Kansas City and upset the Super Bowl champions 21-20 to kickoff the NFL season Thursday night.
This will send the pundits scurrying and was a major bracket-buster in the betting game.
I watched it and my biggest takeaway is that holdout Chiefs D-tackle Chris Jones just saw his stock go up in a big way.
And #4 – This will be my third season as NHL credentialed media so I get that I’m rather new on the beat but isn’t this the quietest NHL off-season in a very long time? The only big news since free agency on July 1 has been the Auston Matthews extension in Toronto.
But we’ve only got another week to go. Next weekend it’ll be a treat to attend the prospects tourney in Estero, FL featuring the Lightning, Panthers, Hurricanes and Predators.
A word to the wise when you’re finding yourself impatient:
Think about something else.
