COMMENTARY: MERRY CHRISTMAS

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on Cat Country 98 & LTD Radio)

A coupla three or more thoughts taking you into CHRISTMAS!

#1 – Through a series of life events I don’t take a single day for granted, and especially days like Thursday where I was able to attend an NHL game and U.S. College Bowl game all in one night.

The Florida Panthers game was what it was – a 4-1 home loss to St. Louis – but the annual Boca Raton Bowl between South Florida and Syracuse was a spectacle at FAU Stadium.

The goings-on in the stands were far more entertaining than the field, as South Florida won a laugher 45-0. It was the only Bowl game of the night and was televised nationally on ESPN. TSN+ carried it in Canada.

Two things stood out: First, Syracuse was favored by three points, but lost by 45. And second, each quarter took an hour to play so add it all up and it was a 4-hour game.

Remarkably, Americans don’t care!

#2 – I also don’t take for granted the phone chat I had on the way to the game with a Roughriders Hall of Famer back home. He’s quite excited about new Saskatchewan head coach Corey Mace, and feels the Stampeders were lucky to make the playoffs last year!

I smiled and nodded. And was only mildly surprised at the optimism. The team has a long ways to go to get where they want to be – with Mace or otherwise – but with free agency being what it is, you can turn a team around in a hurry if you do it right.

It’s nice to see fans are enthusiastic again, but that’s Saskatchewanians for you. Eternally optimistic.

And #3 – If you can believe this upcoming week is the only one we take off on the RP Show on a yearly basis however we have an outstanding week of programming lined up with our annual World Juniors preview with the best hockey pundits, Best Of 2023 episodes, and Year-End Countdown of the biggest stories in the NHL, NFL, CFL and all the other leagues we cover on our TV, radio & streaming show.

As for the Christmas break, it’s going to be a long road trip through Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and finally New Orleans with stops along the way visiting friends.

And again, not taking a second of it for granted.

Merry Christmas.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

I’ve got some bad news First – “Merry” Christmas is a holiday that is so far off the mark of legitimacy it’s pathetic at this point. You’ve all been brain washed into gift giving and at this point it’s not a gift. The receptor looks at it like an absolute expectation – maybe you’ll all hit the mark maybe you wont; but by Dec 26th or the evening of Dec 25th they lose interest. Second – All you “Couples” – this is now the Super Bowl of tension – you have to get together with in laws or “family” –… Read more »
