Commentary: Mad, Mad World

Wednesdays are for random thoughts right here and today we have some good ones:

#1 – It was in 1991 that Tom Cochrane released the song Mad, Mad World where he sang about the whole world going nuts. So people have been saying it for at least 30 years.

But what I do like these days is that we’re living in the “You do you” generation whereby judging others’ tastes is no longer allowed. In fact it’s frowned upon.

Don’t watch college basketball? No big deal. Don’t care for women’s hockey? You do you.

I watched nine hours of NHL hockey on Saturday and afterwards, stood up and thought to myself, “That didn’t even feel like work.”

No MLB nor UFL? No problem.

Jelly Roll sings country now?

You do you.

We have the right to choose whether we want to listen or not.

#2 – Dave Thomas will be introduced as the latest Voice of the Saskatchewan Roughriders today. They’re going through them like a deck of cards, aren’t they?

But Dave is a Weyburn product and a long-time friend of mine. I applaud the move wholeheartedly!

In fact, he should’ve replaced me five years ago.

A local guy, a tireless work ethic, and unlike me, he won’t cause the higher-ups any headaches.

Perfect!

But we sure had fun didn’t we? 😉 And made gobs of money and memories. 

#3 – On the topic of broadcasters, there’s a million of ‘em out there these days, especially now that anyone with a smartphone can call themselves one.

But just like everything else, only the best and strongest will survive. The others will whither away along this war of attrition.

But the one analyst that I turn up the volume when I see his face on the screen is ESPN’s Mark Messier.

There are others that I like and many more which I don’t, but these days the Moose is where it’s at for me.
