Commentary: It Doesn’t Add Up

It’s been far too long since we’ve done a hockey commentary.

There’s no time like the present!

With one week left in the NHL regular season, it truly is as wide open as ever when it comes to predicting a Stanley Cup champion this June.

You may be surprised to know that Draft Kings – the granddaddy of sportsbooks – has the Carolina Hurricanes listed as Stanley Cup favourites this spring.

I know I was surprised by that.

The Canes haven’t won a Stanley Cup in nearly 20 years, were swept by Florida in last year’s Eastern Final, and aren’t even in first place in the NHL’s Metropolitan Division?

I’ll let you in on a little secret – I don’t even really understand how this sports betting game works.

Because if you look at the NHL standings today, the New York Rangers are #1 but are way down the list of betting favourites to win it all. (Sixth, in fact).

In fact the odds look nothing like the standings. Draft Kings has Carolina as the favourite, followed by Florida and Colorado (each +700), and then Edmonton and Dallas in the top five.

The top five in the actual standings are the Rangers, Stars, Hurricanes, Bruins and Canucks.

A reminder, this will all change within a week but if you’re like the millions who will participate in a Stanley Cup Playoff pool – and plan to win rather than donate – it’s prudent to start studying up now.

Or … you can just rely on your own smarts; watch the games and figure it out for yourself.

That’s what I do but then again, I’ve never been called a betting expert.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

Trust me it adds up. It adds up on the credit side of the Draft Kings balance sheet. Probably all set up in the Caribean offshore accounts. Someone is making money and it’s why nobody in the history of gambling has ever seen a Bookie holding down a part time job. “They” know that gamblers in the hierarchy of those with vices are the most degenerate of the bunch. Stats/odds/over/under lines and having Schills as “experts” who are endorsed by athletes – it’s a money printing operation. Word to the wise and this is even from the little casino regina.… Read more »

They don’t care who you bet for so long as you bet. A bet on team A adjusts the odds on everyone else. End result is they pay out some, but keep more. They never lose, sometimes you win, but long run, you lose.

Voluntary tax. And we all pay to clean up the mess.
