MOOSE JAW, Sask. — Denton Mateychuk scored once and added five assists as the Moose Jaw Warriors whipped the visiting Swift Current Broncos 7-2.

Brayden Yager had three goals and two assists for the Warriors, who evened the best-of-seven quarterfinal series 1-1.

Kalem Parker, Martin Rysavy and Jagger Firkus also scored for the Warriors, who outshot the Broncos 39-27.

Josh Filmon and Caleb Wyrostok scored for the Broncos, who won Friday’s opener 7-2.

Game 3 is Tuesday in Swift Current, Sask.

COUGARS 5 ROCKETS 0

(Cougars lead series 2-0)

Riley Heidt had a goal and assist as the Prince George Cougars defeated the visiting Kelowna Rockets 5-0 in Western Hockey League playoff action on Saturday at the CN Centre.

Viliam Kmec, Zac Funk, Borya Valis and Oren Shtrom also scored for the Cougars, who grabbed a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven quarterfinal series. Koehn Ziemmer chipped in with two assists.

Joshua Ravensbergen only had to make 16 saves to post his second shutout in as many games against the Rockets.

The Cougars led 2-0 after the first period and 3-0 heading into the third.

The Rockets, outshot 44-16, will host Game 3 on Tuesday. The Rockets lost 4-0 in Friday’s series opener.

WINTERHAWKS 6 SILVERTIPS 1

(Winterhawks lead best-of-seven series 2-0)

PORTLAND, Ore. — Kyle Chyzowski scored twice and Nate Danielson had a goal and two assists as the Portland Winterhawks defeated the visiting Everett Silvertips 6-1.

Marek Alscher, Tyson Jugnauth and Carter Sotheran also scored for the Winterhawks, who outshot the visitors 43-33 and grabbed a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven quarterfinal series.

Beau Courtney scored for the Silvertips, who trailed 4-1 after the first period and 5-1 heading into the third.

The Winterhawks won Friday’s series opener 8-2.

Game 3 is Monday in Everett, Wash.

SJHL PLAYOFFS (Round 2)

Spencer Bell notched his first career playoff hat trick and the Humboldt Broncos stayed alive in Round 2 with a 4-2 victory in Game 5 Saturday night in Melfort. The Warman, SK native scored two of his three goals in the third period, sandwiching Maddox Amaral’s game-winner at 12:26 of the final stanza.

The Broncos face another elimination game Sunday night, albeit at home, and the Mustangs are down are two lifelines to reach the final and the waiting Flin Flon Bombers.

COYOTES NEWS

TEMPE. Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Coyotes will likely be sold to Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith shortly after the team’s final game and will include a provision guaranteeing current owner Alex Meruelo an expansion team if a new arena is built within five years, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The $1 billion sale is expected to happen between the Coyotes’ final game of the 2023-24 season and the start of the playoffs, barring unforeseen circumstances, the person said on condition of anonymity because the planned deal has not been announced. The deal will transfer the franchise’s hockey operations to Smith, who plans to move the team to Salt Lake City, and Meruelo will move forward with a planned $3 billion project that will include a new arena in Phoenix.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Jared Wright and Rieger Lorenz scored second-period goals, Matt Davis had 35 saves and Denver beat No. 1 overall seed Boston College 2-0 to win the 10th national championship in program history. No. 3 seed Denver (32-9-3), which finished the season on a nine-game win streak, moved past Michigan (nine) for most titles all-time. Davis had 23 third-period saves in his third shutout of the season. The Pioneers outscored their opponents 82-39 in the second period this season. Boston College (34-6-1), which set the program’s single-season record for wins, had its 15-game win streak snapped and was shutout for the first time this season.

WORLD WOMENS HOCKEY

Canada and the United States play for gold today at the women’s world hockey championship in Utica, New York. It will mark the 22nd time in 23 world championship finals that the two countries have squared off for gold. The Canadians blanked Czechia 4-0 and the U-S shut out Finland 5-0 in yesterday’s semifinals.

• AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler has the lead in the Masters after a wild Saturday at Augusta National. And it wasn’t even blowing as hard as the day before. Scheffler had one last birdie for a 71 to give him a one-shot lead over Collin Morikawa going into the final round. They were among six players who had a share of the lead at one point. There were charges and collapses. Bryson DeChambeau made double bogey on the 15th and holed out from the fairway for birdie on the last hole. Tiger Woods had an 82, his worst score in a major.
• AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Tiger Woods shot his worst round in a major championship in the third round of the Masters on Saturday. He had eight bogeys and two double-bogeys while making just a pair of birdies for a 10-over 82. The only other time Woods had shot in the 80s in a major had been his 80 in the first round of the 2005 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay and his 81 in the third round of the 2002 British Open at Muirfield. His worst round at Augusta National had been back-to-back 78s in 2022, the last time he played the full weekend. Now, he will play his 100th round at the Masters on Sunday long before the leaders decide the outcome.
