CFL Week 19 Preview: West Division Race Takes Centre Stage

With just three weeks remaining in the 2026 Canadian Football League regular season, the focus shifts almost entirely to the West Division, where five teams remain in contention for playoff positioning. Montreal and Toronto have already locked up the top two spots in the East, leaving Week 19 to be dominated by a pair of critical Western matchups and two games involving teams at opposite ends of the standings:

Edmonton Elks (-6.5) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Friday

The Edmonton Elks enter Friday night’s matchup at Tim Hortons Field with an 11-4 record and an opportunity to move one step closer to securing first place in the West. Edmonton can clinch the division with a victory over Hamilton combined with a B.C. loss later Friday night. The Elks have already secured a playoff berth and are coming off a bye week after defeating Hamilton 37-35 in their previous meeting.

Hamilton improved to 5-11 with a convincing victory over Ottawa last week but has been eliminated from playoff contention weeks ago. The Tiger-Cats will nevertheless have an opportunity to play spoiler against an Edmonton team with considerably more at stake. The previous meeting was decided in overtime, underscoring the competitive nature of the matchup despite the significant difference in the teams’ records.

Ottawa Redblacks at B.C. Lions (-13.5), Friday

The B.C. Lions return home Friday night in the Gravy Bowl with a chance to clinch a playoff berth against an Ottawa team still searching for its first victory of the season. B.C. is 9-6 and has won eight of its last nine games, moving into second place in the West. The Lions also enter the game after a remarkable 24-17 victory over Toronto in which kicker Sean Whyte accounted for all 24 of B.C.’s points with eight field goals.

Ottawa, meanwhile, fell to 0-15 following last week’s loss to Hamilton. The RedBlacks have been eliminated from postseason contention, while B.C. can officially secure a playoff berth with a victory. With the Lions chasing Edmonton for first place and protecting second place from Saskatchewan and Calgary, the stakes are considerably higher for the home side, but don’t think Ottawa will lay down. They’re currently riding a league record 21-game losing streak, but don’t want to be the first team in CFL history to go winless. McLeod Bethel-Thompson has been named the starting QB.

Calgary Stampeders at Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Saturday night’s meeting at Princess Auto Stadium may be the most consequential game of the weekend for the West Division playoff race. Calgary enters at 8-8, while Winnipeg sits at 7-8. The Stampeders can clinch a playoff berth with a victory, while the Blue Bombers remain firmly in the race but need to start turning opportunities into wins.

Winnipeg has lost three of its last four games, including a 37-10 defeat against Montreal last week. The Bombers are also dealing with quarterback Zach Collaros being limited by injury. Calgary, meanwhile, has already demonstrated its ability to win in Winnipeg, beating the Bombers 52-30 earlier this season. Saturday’s rematch should carry considerably more pressure, with both teams needing the points as the playoff race enters its final stretch.

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Montreal Alouettes

Thanksgiving Monday brings a major test for Saskatchewan, which visits Montreal in a matchup featuring two teams moving in very different directions. The Roughriders are 8-7 after losing four of their last five games, while Montreal is 12-3 and has already clinched first place in the East Division. The Alouettes will host the Eastern Final on Nov. 7.

Montreal dominated Winnipeg 37-10 last week, with receiver Tyson Philpot producing 207 yards and establishing several franchise and Canadian receiving records. Saskatchewan, meanwhile, dropped a 37-31 decision to Calgary and remains in the middle of a crowded Western playoff race.

The Roughriders cannot clinch or be eliminated this week, but a victory in Montreal would provide a significant boost to their playoff position. For the Alouettes, the challenge will be maintaining their momentum despite having already secured the division title.

Week 19 therefore offers little margin for error in the West. Edmonton is chasing first place, B.C. and Calgary can secure postseason berths, and Saskatchewan and Winnipeg are battling to keep their playoff hopes firmly in their own hands. With only three weeks remaining, every result carries increasing significance.
