The Ottawa Redblacks‘ defence came through late in the fourth quarter of a 23-19 win over Winnipeg Thursday night at TD Place Stadium. The Blue Bombers had three tries at the end zone from Ottawa’s seven-yard line but two incompletions and a sack snuffed the threat. The game was delayed for about an hour late in the fourth quarter due to lightning and heavy rain.

“The vibe in our locker room was we wanted to get back out there,” said Redblacks coach Bob Dyce. “These guys wanted to win this game the way it should have been on the field for 60 minutes and so we were in there and we stayed mentally prepared to go out there and finish the game.”

Winnipeg head coach Mike O’Shea felt his team had a lacklustre first half, but liked the squad’s pushback in the second half.

“I’m just glad that we got a chance to get back out there and finish it for real,” said O’Shea. “It would have probably left a sour taste in everyone’s mouth if we didn’t get to finish it. We came up short.”

STANLEY CUP FINAL

The Edmonton Oilers are in must-win mode after dropping a third straight game to Florida in the Stanley Cup final. The Panthers hung on for a 4-3 victory last night in Edmonton and can complete a four-game sweep tomorrow at Rogers Place. Florida has never won the Stanley Cup. Edmonton’s last NHL title came in 1990.
