Thursday Sports: Sea Bears Bounce Stingers
CEBL
- The Sea Bears blew a 16-point lead and trailed heading into Target Score Time, but came back to earn their first-ever home victory over the Edmonton Stingers in a 102-101 thriller at Canada Life Centre on Wednesday. It marks the third come-from-behind victory of a four-game winning streak for Winnipeg, which is now 7-5 and into third place alone in the West following Calgary’s loss to Brampton earlier Wednesday.
- For the second straight game, Elijah Mitrou-Long played the role of hero. Thanks to the Canadian guard’s game-winning three-pointer, the Brampton Honey Badgers (6-8) came away with a thrilling 108-105 home victory over the Calgary Surge (6-6) at the CAA Centre to extend their winning streak to three games.
- The 5-7 Saskatchewan Rattlers host the Scarborough Shooting Stars Friday at SaskTel Centre; the home debut of reigning CEBL MVP Teddy “Buckets” Allen.
MLB
- The Toronto Blue Jays host the Houston Astros for the finale of their four-game series Thursday afternoon. Toronto fell 9-2 Wednesday night after the two teams split the opening two games. Chris Bassitt will open on the mound for the Jays, while Framber Valdez gets the start for the Astros.
- Vladimir Guerrero Junior is back in the American League’s starting lineup for the upcoming All-Star Game. The Toronto Blue Jays first baseman was voted in as a starter Wednesday. He beat out Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle for the honour. The only other Blue Jays that have started three all-star games are José Bautista, Roberto Alomar, and Joe Carter.

CFL
The Toronto Argonauts are in Saskatchewan tonight to take on the Roughriders in CFL action. The 2-and-1 Argos suffered their first loss of the season last week, falling to defending champion Montreal. Meanwhile, the undefeated ‘Riders will have Shea Patterson make his first CFL start under centre with starting quarterback Trevor Harris out with a knee injury.
NHL
- Rocanville, SK’s Jessica Campbell will become the first woman to work on the bench of an NHL franchise after the Seattle Kraken hired her as an assistant coach. Campbell has spent the past two seasons working as an assistant coach for Seattle’s American Hockey League affiliate alongside Dan Bylsma, who is now head coach of the Kraken. Campbell won a silver medal with Canada as a player at the 2015 world championship.
- Anton Lundell and the Florida Panthers have agreed to a six-year, 30 (m) million-dollar contract. The move ensures that the Stanley Cup champions have all eight of their leading scorers from this past season back to defend the title. Lundell had 13 goals and 22 assists in 78 games for the Panthers this past season. His production was even better in the playoffs with 17 points in 24 games.
