Commentary: Hired To Be Fired

A coupla three or more thoughts entering the weekend …

#1 – I used to loathe these playoff game weeks in the CFL! The weeks just seemed so incredibly long. During the regular season we’d fill up the talk shows and columns all week with stats and history from the Game Notes just to fill the time.

But playoffs, none of that matters. (i.e. You can throw the stats and records out the window).

All that matters is what happens during three hours on game day. But you had to wait all week for it. At least now they’ve moved the games from Sunday to Saturday, so it’s less of a wait, and now I’ve got all the other sports to follow and cover which is a nice breath of fresh air.

#2 – Everyone wants the predictions so since I went with a BC-Montreal Grey Cup before the season even started, I guess I’ll have to go with the Lions to win this weekend. The Argonauts too.

But don’t put money on that.

#3 – The Thursday Nighter in the NFL was looking to be the stinker of the century. The Texans and Jets were scoreless well into the second quarter which had me looking up if there’s ever been a 0-0 tie in league history.

Turns out there have been 73 of them, but none since 1943.

Then the Jets caught fire in the second half, pulling out an eventual 21-13 victory, covering the 2.5-point spread.

Those oddsmakers know what they’re talking about, and I still don’t know how they do it so well.

And #4 – Speaking of, what are the odds on who’s going to be the first coach fired in the NHL? I haven’t seen them anywhere, but I haven’t gone looking for them either.

**Hang on, I just looked them up and they say Pittsburgh’s Mike Sullivan is the most on the hot seat, followed by Montreal’s Martin St. Louis. Chicago’s Luke Richardson is #3.

Oddly, I had a Bruins fan texting me last night, saying it should be Boston coach Jim Montgomery as the B’s are dead last in the Atlantic Division and got bombed 8-1 in Carolina last night.

You’ve gotta pity those, who are hired to be fired.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
