On Mondays we recap the weekend, and look ahead. There’s plenty to see in both directions …

#1 – The Grey Cup has already arrived in Vancouver via air and sea and the teams will arrive today: the Toronto Argonauts and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. They’ll meet in Sunday’s 111th Grey Cup at BC Place Stadium and the RP Show will be at Grey Cup Week beginning Wednesday. This already feels so big!

#2 – Once again the Saskatchewan Roughriders won’t be there. The Riders bowed out along the Grey Cup trail, losing 38-22 in Winnipeg in the Western Final. That’s 11 years without a Grey Cup appearance, much less a Grey Cup win.

What’s more alarming to me is the overall malaise regarding this drought. Some franchise forefathers are even touting that this season should be celebrated.

Newsflash: If you celebrate “pretty good” rather than accepting nothing but the best, that’s all you’re ever going to get.

I wish them well.

#3 – The biggest item on the sports docket this week, as far as I’m concerned, is Saturday’s Stanley Cup Final preview between the Winnipeg Jets and Florida Panthers here in Sunrise. It’s a battle of the NHL’s top two teams and literally could be a preview of the final series in June.

I watched the Jets toy with the Dallas Stars on Saturday as they improved to 14-1, then witnessed in-person the Florida Panthers win their seventh straight game, beating Philly 4-3 in a shootout.

This is a Stanley Cup Final preview indeed!

And #4 – Lest We Forget. Thousands upon thousands paid the ultimate price defending Canada’s borders so that we could enjoy the freedom which we do today.

Take a minute today to remember and honour them, and for God’s sake wear a poppy!

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.

(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm & 4 pm ET on Game+TV, WQEE Radio, Podcast & YouTube Live)

#4 Well we are not free. On one hand the soldiers have defended our way of life. We are then told our way or life is wrong and we stole our way here This is a special day. Similar to USA. We are tired of apologizing after being gaslit. One more year of this and then Canada will be on the road to great again Just remember. All things rot from the inside. The federal and provincial institutions and work forces are rotten to the core #2 the 2024 Roughriders were never a serious contenter. They started 4-0 beating nobody… Read more »

I was completely wrong on agreeing with that move. In western Canada we are not anywhere near the realm of what takes place in those Ontario and Quebec universities I disagreed on 98% of all things hockey with him. He never evolved past 1996. Now he is from Mississauga and Brampton. He was witnessing first hand what too 5 years to arrive here. We needed a cheap labor force to advance the economy. Population matters. To make $ we opened up the gate in Saskatchewan. Now we pay the price to of having all of them here. Unskilled and nothing… Read more »
