Chris Jones Back In The Game
A source tells RodPedersen.com that veteran football coach Chris Jones has agreed to join Bill Belichick’s staff at the University of North Carolina for 2025.
Jones will reportedly serve as a defensive assistant for the Tar Heels.
Jones, 58, split last season between Edmonton and Hamilton in the Canadian Football League. He began last season as Head Coach and GM of the Elks before being let go midway through the campaign. Weeks later he was named defensive coordinator of the Tiger-Cats and helped the club perform a miraculous turnaround, narrowly missing the playoffs.
However Jones was not brought back for 2025 by Ticats coach Scott Milanovich.
The South Pittsburgh, TN product has served various roles during CFL stops in Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton, Saskatchewan and Hamilton over the past 20-plus seasons. He also spent two seasons as a defensive assistant with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns under head coach Freddie Kitchens, who is now also a part of Belichick’s North Carolina staff.
Kitchens is believed to be the one responsible for connecting Jones and Belichick in Chapel Hill.

Who woulda thunk it! 🤓🤓
Me. “Defensive Assistant” is slightly above “Analysty” which is slightly above “Quality Control”.
Expect him to resemble Rodney Dangerfield/Thornton Mellon in the 1986 classic back to school.
The only “assisting” he will do for Bill Belichik is fetch coffee and get presentations ready for meetings.
It’s a j.o.b.
…..he would be a break out star in UFL. That is a legit league. Coaches are Wade Philips to Marcel Bellefaille. Cory Chamblin had been on a staff that’s won the 3 championships. Those guys will get NFL jobs.
Congrat’s Chris Jones!
If I’m not mistaken, this is his 8th life……
Rejoice he’s not in Canada ruining another franchise.
