Revenge, they say, is a dish best served cold.

I never really understood what that means at all. But the phrase has been harkening in my mind this week as the Moose Jaw Miller Express baseball club got set to host the Okotoks Dawgs in a two-game set which began last night at Ross Wells Park.

You see, the Dawgs are the Evil Empire of the WCBL. Like the Yankees, the Eskimos. Even the Patriots. You know what I mean.

And last year in a gripping championship Final, the Millers fell in Game 3 of the Best of 3 on a walk-off home run by the Dawgs at a sold-out park in Okotoks.

I was there. (Incidentally I think that’ll be the title of my next book, but I digress).

Wednesday night’s meeting on a beautiful night at The Ross had all the feels of the 2010 Canada Day Comeback in the CFL, in which the Saskatchewan Roughriders were set to host the Montreal Alouettes in the July 1 season opener at Taylor Field.

It was the first game between the two since the 2009 Grey Cup in the November before, when “we” shot ourselves in the foot and lost the title game due to the infamous 13th Man debacle.

The Riders came back from 21 points down to win that day, and that’s why we called it the Canada Day Comeback.

But it was a hollow victory. It was in no way revenge for losing the Grey Cup six months before. Avenging, maybe.

Last night the Millers fell down 5-0, then 9-6 to the Evil Empire but staged a stunning rally to tie it at 11-11 and go to extra innings.

And wouldn’t you know it, little ol’ Moose Jaw recorded a walk-off victory of their own, with an RBI single in the 10th which sent home the winning run.

Revenge? I’m not sure.

But dang, it felt good.
