A coupla three or more thoughts entering the weekend:
#1 – Buckle up for a fun next little while in the baseball world. The Blue Jays made a splash on Thursday’s MLB trade deadline, acquiring former Cy Young award winner Shane Bieber from Cleveland. He’s recovering from Tommy John surgery and hasn’t pitched in the majors this year, but will be ready come fall. It reminds me of the Florida Panthers acquiring an injured Brad Marchand at the NHL trade deadline in March. That worked out okay.
And it appears our Moose Jaw Miller Express will face the Saskatoon Berries in Round 1 of the WCBL playoffs. Game 1 goes Wednesday in the Berry Patch. Last night the Millers came back from an 8-1 deficit to beat the Weyburn Beavers 11-8 at Ross Wells Park. Fun times!
#2 – It’s time for the worm to turn in the CFL. What I mean by that is, we’re now in the middle third of the season and this is where the wheat separates from the chaff. Week 9 opened Thursday with Ottawa smoking Calgary 31-11. That breathes life into the last-place RedBlacks while the Stampeders are in big trouble, losing back-to-back games without Vernon Adams Jr.
The Riders are still a CFL best 6-1 and visit Montreal on Saturday in the Game of the Week. If the Riders stay healthy, there’s no reason to think their fortunes will turn. But stay tuned.
And #3 – The NFL preseason opener Thursday night with the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. The LA Chargers destroyed the Detroit Lions 34-7 two days in advance of Saturday’s Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
If you can believe, there were odds on the game and the Lions were favored by 2 1/2 going in. The Chargers smashed that.
But if you’re betting on NFL preseason football, we may need to have a talk.
