A coupla three or more thoughts entering the weekend …

#1 – We went to the rink in Sunrise last night excited to watch the greatest goal scorer hockey has ever seen – Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin.

But it was another living Hall of Famer who stole the show – Florida Panthers winger Brad Marchand.

Needing two points to hit 1,000 for his career, the Bruins legend – turned Florida legend – potted a pair of assists, including one on an empty-netter, to hit the mark and add another impressive pelt to the wall.

Afterwards Marchand said it was a relief to get it out of the way, in game one of a lengthy homestand, and an honour to become just the 102nd NHL player to hit 1,000 points.

Twas a fun night.

#2 – Grey Cup revelry continues in Winnipeg. Apparently to no one’s surprise, BC quarterback Nathan Rourke was named league MVP, nudging out Hamilton’s Bo Levi Mitchell. I phrase it that way because 90% of respondents in an RP Show poll voted for Rourke as well. I thought it would be closer than that.

Rourke is definitely the face of the league. Yet neither finalist has his team in the Grey Cup.

No, it’s Trevor Harris of Saskatchewan and Davis Alexander of Montreal who do, and they’ll meet Sunday at Princess Auto Stadium.

I got the Riders to win. Enjoy it! The Green & White in the Grey Cup doesn’t happen often.

And #3 – Week 11 in the NFL kicked off Thursday with New England dumping the Jets 27-14 in New York for their eighth win in a row. Fans around the NFL are lamenting the fact the Patriots are back on top of the AFC East so fast after dispatching Belichick and Brady.

For some reason they still don’t understand one simple fact: ownership wins.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
