A coupla three or more thoughts heading into the weekend …

#1 – They say the best predictor of the future is to look at the past. I believe that’s true in some cases. Last night in Denver it was a rematch of the 1996 Stanley Cup Final: Florida Panthers at the Colorado Avalanche. Oldtimers will recall the Avs swept that series, and it was an easy pick to make last night too.

Colorado smoked the Cats 6-2 but there was far more to it than history. The Panthers were playing on back-to-back nights and had back-up Daniil Tarasov in goal. Either way, it wasn’t much of a game.

#2 – I whiffed on the Thursday Night Football game. Tampa Bay was hosting Atlanta in virtually a must-win game, the Falcons had nothing to play for, and the Bucs welcomed back all their alumni for a 50-year franchise reunion. Usually players on the current team get stirred when hanging around the franchise greats for a few days.

All signs pointed to a Buccaneers win, right?

Not so fast my friend. Kirk Cousins led the Falcons to a 29-28 upset victory, dealing Tampa a blow to their hopes of winning the NFC South.

That ticket went up in smoke.

And #3 – When Jim Barker was named to the personnel staff of the Toronto Argonauts last week, so many RP Show viewers lamented the loss of our top Football Friday analyst. But I didn’t count my chickens.

As it turns out, Jim Barker is returning to the airwaves this week and for the foreseeable future. Again, not so fast my friend!

We’ve got a great relationship with Jim, with the Toronto Argonauts, and clearly the powers-that-be felt his Friday appearances on our show are great for the CFL. Somebody called Jim the Tom Brady of the CFL (being allowed to be part a team, and also appear on national TV at the same time).

I call it, common sense.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.

Good on Jim Barker staying on the airwaves. Yeah, Jim and Tom Brady mirror each other, they actually look like Father & Son.

As Shivers is out in Toronto, is any team interested in him after another team dumping him?

Down goes Mo; I respect Modano for sure but for my money Joey Mullen was the best ever US hockey player with 3 Stanley Cups. In ’89 with the Flames he led them with 51 goals 110 pts, won the leagues +/- award, while earning his second Lady Bing, first team all star ( 3 time all star) and first of his 3 Molson Cup awards ( most 3 star selections in Calgary. He was the first US player to 500 goals and won the Lester Patrick trophy in ’95 ( Contrubution to USA hockey). All as an undrafted 5’9… Read more »
