Wednesday Commentary: Random Thoughts

It’s Random Thoughts Wednesday on this Commentary. Where should we begin?
#1 – It was a fun night in the NHL. The Oilers may have lost in Nashville but Connor McDavid, on his birthday, extended his point streak to 20 games. But he’s still a long ways away from the record of 51 straight games with a point, held by the Great One.
#2 – Utah bombed the Leafs 6-1 and Mammoth forward Dylan Guenther became the first player in franchise history to hit 50 career goals in a Utah uniform. It still seems so odd to me that the Mammoth were allowed to shed themselves of the Coyotes & Jets record book. I mean, why would you want to?
Imagine if we were all able to shed our history with the wave of a wand! Incredible.
#3 – Somewhat shocking news out of Pittsburgh where Mike Tomlin is stepping down as coach of the Steelers after 19 years; never having had a losing season. But as I often say, when your time is up, it’s up and no one knows it better than you.
That makes nine head coaching jobs coming open in the NFL this off-season. That’s almost a third of the league!
#4 – I’m watching the goings-on at CFL Winter Meetings in Calgary with a lot of interest. What a great job by the CFL to open the proceedings up to the media the way that they have.
The GMs and coaches are offering counter proposals to the rule changes announced in October and I’m more-than-curious to see if the Owners & Governors are willing to back off on them, even a little. They usually don’t.
And Rider GM Jeremy O’Day says the club is undecided on bringing back veteran kicker Brett Lauther after a spotty year, even though the club won the Grey Cup with him.
Hey – they won the Grey Cup. Saskatchewan gets a pass on second-guessing their managerial decisions.
For one off-season, at least.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.

#2-There’s lots of questionable history in that state.
…..that is an understatement. I recommend Peter Berg’s anthology American Primeval…..it is the state to pass through on the way to California or someplace else.
Normal people do not belong there. The same could be stated for Nevada.
