Wednesday Commentary: Random Thoughts

It’s Random Thoughts Wednesday … here we go!
#1 – Finally got a chance to sit down and truly get into the Olympics. The first thing I saw? The USA smoked Canada 5-0 in women’s hockey and the scouting report I got from the women’s hockey people afterwards is that “Canada is old and slow”.
The first thing I thought about that was, “I hope the same can’t be said for the mens team.”
I guess we’ll see.
#2 – Your friendly neighborhood Roughriders are going to look a lot different in 2026. On Tuesday’s first official day of free agency, veterans Mario Alford, C.J. Reavis and Tommy Nield bolted for greener pastures.
I know Rider fans are mad but look at it this way: “Don’t cry cuz it’s over. Smile cuz it happened.”
The CFL is built now for teams to pull off a quick rebuild, and that’s a GREAT thing. The Riders did that, and are reigning champs.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
#3 – It was so great to be joined by Swift Current Broncos & NHL alum Bob Wilkie on Tuesday’s RP Show. We discussed he and his teammates’ mental recovery from the trauma caused by the Broncos bus crash 40 years ago. It’s depicted in a new documentary entitled “Sideways”. Bob hopes their story can help people dealing with trauma in their lives, and avoid the pitfalls he fell into.
There are a whole lotta people out there bitter and broken because something happened to them decades ago that wasn’t even their fault! Don’t waste a life.
And #4 – Ugh. I took basically one day for an old realization to set it in: once football season is over, sports fans – and RP Show viewers – become completely fragmented.
One of the greatest things about football is that it unites us all. But once the season’s over, people focus on other things. I noticed quickly some are looking forward to spring training opening, others will be hot on the hockey trail, others don’t care about hockey at all, some will be following the UFL (and maybe I’ll get into it too), while more and more are into soccer.
My job’s to stay on top of it all and try to be entertaining.
Beats working for a living.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.

Go Tiger Cats 2026.
Great stuff 1) There’s hope for humanity. Women’s speed skating. Those are legitimate athletes and the type of women I’m guessing when they were little one of two or both things happen. Winter is long and people love to skate. A father takes his little girl to a hockey practice. Takes one look around and saves her from integrating into what can only be described as a modern Sodom & Gomorra. If NHL teams want to hire females. Hire the Speed Skaters to develop that skill. I can assure you Lane Lambert in Seattle is s.u.f.f.e.r.i.n.g trying to run an… Read more »
