Friday Commentary: Y’er Welcome

A coupla three or more thoughts entering the weekend …

#1 – The more things change, the more they stay the same. Since I was a little kid, the adage always was that the best round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs was Round 1. 40-plus years later, that’s still the case. Carolina walloped Philly last night to take a 3-0 series lead and they’re steamrolling their way to Round 3. Colorado can do the same with a win at Minny this weekend.

Round 2 hasn’t had the drama of Round 1.

#2 – That’s not to say there isn’t some measure of intrigue. Anaheim hosts Vegas tonight in Game 3, and the plucky Ducks have yet to lose at home so far in these Stanley Cup Playoffs. I’ve got a lotta friends who work for the Ducks and they always felt they had a ton of talent as a team. They just couldn’t find someone to pull it all together.

Joel Quenneville seems to be that guy.

#3 – Please tell me you’re following the Centennial Cup in Summerside, PEI! It’s been one of my favourite hockey tournaments, also since I was a little kid. I grew up watching those games in the farmhouse living room and learning of teams like the Richmond Sockeyes and Orillia Travelways. That stuff sticks with you!

Day 1 on Thursday featured three games and the Toronto Patriots, Canmore Eagles and Niverville Nighthawks all won. The Saskatchewan champion Flin Flon Bombers play their first game today against College du Francais Longeuil. Follow along with me at HockeyCanada.ca.

#4 – The NBA Playoffs are in Round 2 and I’m not following that nearly as closely, but I check the scores. Most of them are blowouts, and it says here that’s a big problem for the NBA.

#5 – It’s a Football Friday on the RP Show and with CFL Rookie Camps officially underway, it’ll be two hours of gridiron talk.
