Tuesday Commentary: The Good, The Great & The Ugly

It’s Tuesday and time for the Good, the Great & the Ugly!

First the good: From the “Never A Dull Moment” file comes the news that the Edmonton Oilers are set to hire Mike Babcock as their next head coach pending approval from the NHL Players Assocation. This, a week after Babs saying he’s happily retired and yours truly predicting that Bruce Cassidy will be coaching the Oilers next season.

Three things come to mind on that: 1) They haven’t hired him yet, 2) In life, things change, and 3) The Oilers simply couldn’t wait one more week to interview Cassidy, when permission would’ve assuredly been granted by the Vegas Golden Knights (who own his rights). It just tells me how dysfunctional the Oilers are.

Next the great: This is very likely a distraction NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman doesn’t welcome as Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final goes tonight in Vegas. The Knights lead Carolina 2-1 in a series which somebody said the other day, “Every game has been epic”.

Not sure what the ratings are in each country for this series but my guess is they’ve climbed each game. The hype has been undeniable.

And finally the ugly: It’s really not ugly at all; I just couldn’t find somewhere to fit this in. I hadn’t planned on watching the NBA Finals at all but the hype surrounding Monday’s Game 3 left me no choice. Having President Donald J. Trump in attendance – and the three ring circus that accompanies that – made it all the more fun. And I’m so glad I tuned in because the ABC broadcast was nothing short of epic. There were more celebrities there than the Oscars and in the end the Knicks lost an epic game to San Antonio, cutting their series lead to 2-1.

And predictably, Trump is being blamed even though he fell asleep during the game and had no impact on the outcome.

You can’t write this stuff.
