A coupla three or more thoughts entering the weekend …

#1 – It was quite a wild night of football! 179 days after the Super Bowl, the NFL preseason kicked off with the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, OH. Didya watch it? Carolina rookie QB Haynes King scored a rare walkoff touchdown as the Panthers scored a 33-30 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.

Man, the NFL always does it right.

And, ironically, the Toronto Argonauts beat the Calgary Stampeders by the exact same score, 33-30, at BMO Field in the opener to Week 10. It came on a field goal with 11 seconds left by Brady Lidster. When it comes to CFL football, nobody can complain about the excitement level there either.

#2 – The Riders are home to Ottawa tonight in a rematch of the 1966 Grey Cup. Sask is 5-2, the RedBlacks are 0-7. As John Frenzy would say, “Don’t worry folks, this one’s going to be a laugher!”

#3 – The Western Canadian Baseball League playoffs begin tonight and here in Moose Jaw, the history-making Miller Express host the Medicine Hat Mavericks in Game 1 of the Best-of-3. Regina is at Saskatoon in Game 1 of the other series on our side. The Millers won a franchise record 41 games this season but I’m not worried about them resting on their laurels. As rookie coach Michael Gonzalez said at our year-end bbq last night, “We haven’t done a thing yet.”

And #4 – The iconic Kelly Hrudey announced his run at Sportsnet and Hockey Night In Canada has come to an end as the network informed him they’re not renewing his contract. I’ll have much more on this in my weekend newsletter which you can sign up for at RodPedersen.com, presented by SUDS.

If Rogers is gonna torch the classiest guy in the business, there’s not much hope for the rest of us.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.

When Kelly Hrudey retired. He hadna second period segment to himself. It was Behind the Mask and must watch television. Time passes and what happened to him was a workplace tragedy. He was a great Flames colour analyst. On the flip side he was on the panel. To have Kelly sit there with Ron McLean and that other pig. He conceded and let Bieksa talk and the other one. In that case he mentally disassociated and waited for it to mercilessly come to an end. The LA Kings/San Jose Sharks need to pick him up. Seattle would be a good… Read more »
