Tuesday Commentary: The Good, The Great & The Ugly

It’s Tuesday and time for the Good, the Great & the Ugly!

First the good: Fall is for football and the games haven’t disappointed. Week 3 in the NFL wrapped up Monday night with the Bears upsetting the Eagles 27-7 on the arm of backup QB Case Keenum. So far 2026 is turning into the Year of the Backup with #1 guys going down but the backups pulling off the wins: (see Minnesota and Carson Wentz, and the Giants and Jameis Winston). Hey – it’s always good to have a storyline.

In the CFL, the Riders host Calgary in the Game of the Year on Friday. A Stamps win could potentially create a three-way tie for second-place in the West! It’s the Game of the Year … till next week.

Next the great: It’s opening night in the NHL. What more needs to be said? Carolina will raise the Stanley Cup banner with the Florida Panthers in the house while we’ve got some classic Canadian battles tonight with the Canadiens at Maple Leafs and the Canucks at Oilers. The Golden Knights open their Western Conference title defense at home against Chicago. The NHL always does it right.

Buckle up because we’re in for at least the next eight months of the coolest game on ice.

And finally the ugly: It’s only ugly depending on how you look at it. The WHL’s move to put their video broadcasts on YouTube has drawn huuuuuuuuge numbers on the free platform. I’ve been tuning into the games and can’t believe how many people are watching. The trouble is, when you look at the empty seats, you have to wonder if people are staying home to watch the games on their phone?

I’d love to be a fly on the wall in the owners meetings because while the fans say it’s a great way to showcase the great product the Dub is, it’s not putting money in the teams’ pockets and, sorry to say, that’s the name of the game. It’s the age old dilemma, and streaming has just replaced TV in that regard. How long before we see regional blackouts on YouTube?

I’m glad I’m not the one making the call on that.
