Wednesday Commentary: Here We Are

It’s Random Thoughts Wednesday and boy do we have a lot!

#1 – Welcome back Cotter. Paul Cotter scored in overtime for the Vancouver Canucks in a stunning 6-5 victory at Edmonton on NHL Opening Night. It’s the only pick I got wrong outta the five games, but that’s okay. The ensuing theatre is going to be entertaining as hell until the Oilers’ next game, at Vancouver on Thursday. The newswire postgame story said Edmonton goalie Tristan Jarry “only made 17 saves”. They’re right.

Elsewhere Jacob Markstrom posted a 15-save shutout as Florida opened with a 1-0 victory at Carolina. Meanwhile Sergei Bobrovsky lost his Leafs debut as Toronto fell 3-2 to Montreal. Boston blanked the NY Rangers 3-0 and not surprisingly, Vegas whipped Chicago 5-2.

There are just three games tonight: Penguins at Flyers, Islanders at Leafs and Kings at Avalanche.

#2 – There is nothing – and I mean NOTHING – like Fall baseball at Yankee Stadium. And the scenes Tuesday night were spectacular as Cam Schlittler tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings as New York whipped Boston 9-0 in Game 1 of their wildcard series. If you missed it and want to see what I’m talking about, they’ll do it again tonight with Game 2 in the Bronx. In the other wildcard openers, the Padres, White Sox and Braves all won. I can’t wait to see Carnduff’s Carter Beck up with Atlanta one day soon. Having watched enough MLB, and of Carter, it’s a slam-dunk that he belongs there.
