Canadian Football League (CFL)

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers kept their playoff hopes alive Saturday night with a 33-28 victory over the Calgary Stampeders at Princess Auto Stadium.

Winnipeg built an early advantage and held off Calgary’s second-half push to secure a crucial late-season win. The Blue Bombers scored 10 points in the second quarter to take a 17-9 halftime lead, then added another seven in the third. Calgary responded with 13 points in the third quarter but couldn’t complete the comeback.

The Stampeders continued to fight in the fourth, scoring six points, but Winnipeg’s defence did enough to protect the lead. The victory gave the Blue Bombers an important boost in the Western Division playoff race as the regular season approached its conclusion.

Calgary’s loss left the Stampeders with more work to do in the closing stretch, while Winnipeg gained valuable momentum at a critical point in the campaign.

The Cleveland Guardians are heading to the American League Championship Series after completing a remarkable comeback against the Chicago White Sox, winning Game 5 of their Division Series by a 2-0 score Saturday night.

Cleveland overcame an 0-2 deficit in the best-of-five series to win three consecutive games and eliminate Chicago. The Guardians became the first team since the 2017 New York Yankees to win a best-of-five postseason series after losing the opening two games.

Right-hander Gavin Williams delivered a postseason performance for the ages, striking out 12 batters and tying Cleveland’s franchise record for strikeouts in a playoff game. The Guardians’ pitching staff combined for 21 strikeouts, a record for a nine-inning regular-season or postseason game.
