CFL’ERS ON DISPLAY IN THE SPRING LEAGUE WEEK 2

Week 2 in The Spring League featured a pair of games in the Alamodome bubble in San Antonio, TX on Wednesday evening.

In the early game, former Toronto Argonauts QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson threw for over 300 yards and two touchdowns as his Aviators beat the Blues 23-17 in overtime. The winning score came in overtime as the Aviators’ Mathew Sexton scored on a walk-off punt return touchdown.

In the late game, the Alphas came out on top 22-17 over the Conquerors. Former Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville is the head coach of the Conquerors while former CFL QB and assistant coach Drew Tate is the running backs coach and tightends coach for the Alphas. Vinny Papale – the son of Philadelphia Eagles great Vince Papale – scored a touchdown for the Alphas. The younger Papale was added to the Montreal Alouettes roster in May of 2020 but obviously never saw the field due to the season cancellation. Former OSU star J.T. Barrett fired the TD pass to Papale.

Both games Wednesday were aired nationally in the U.S. on Fox Sports 1.

Week 2 concludes Thursday with the Generals up against the Jousters at 8:00 pm ET on FS1.

The Spring League bills itself as a development league for the NFL, playing a 5-week season. Founded in 2017 by Brian Wood, it’s boasted several future and former CFL’ers and NFL’ers including Johnny Manziel.
