It’s Tuesday and time for the Good, the Great & The Ugly!

First the good: We are three full days into the NHL preseason and aside from enjoying the action, you shouldn’t be reading much into the results.

And you certainly shouldn’t be betting on these games! (Unless you don’t like having money).

But it’s good that the Calgary Flames are 3-0 including sweeping the Oilers in a pair of split squad games Monday night. Jonathan Huberdeau had three assists in one of them.

The team hasn’t won a lot for a few years so take the wins when you can.

Next the great: This 2024 NFL quarterback draft class has been nothing short of sensational. The latest is Jayden Daniels – formerly of LSU – who threw for 254 yards and accounted for three touchdowns in Washington’s 38-33 stunner over Cincinnati on Monday Night Football.

Caleb Williams, Bo Nix, and Daniels already have wins in their rookie season, and it’s not even October yet! Atlanta’s Michael Penix Jr. and Minnesota’s J.J. McCarthy have yet to play.

The pro-readiness of players coming out of college is great.

And lastly, the ugly: It’s been fascinating to hear from Calgary Stampeders fans who’ve written into the RP Show to offer explanations for the team’s last-place showing in the CFL this season.

They’re blaming the advent of 1-year contracts as a hindrance to building continuity. One fan, for some reason, went so far as to blame Covid for restricting travel of star Americans to Canada. The players themselves are saying there’s a “generational barrier” between older vets and the youngsters.

Maybe, but all teams have to deal with these issues.

I can guarantee you eight days a week that you never really know what’s going on in inside an organization but it seems the team badly needs clarification on the John Hufnagel situation.

Is he gone, or not? It seems there have been multiple announcements of him stepping down, yet I get reports that he’s still around the facility everyday.

It reminds me of Ken Miller with the Roughriders in 2011. He stepped down after the 2010 season, but hung around and looked over the shoulder of his replacement Greg Marshall.

The results were disastrous.

And “disastrous” is the best term to describe this 2024 Stamps season.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.

And in MLB; the BJs lost another one.
Catcher Alejandro Kirk gunned down 3 baserunners and extended his hit streak to 15 games, while Vlady was 0 for 4 with an error.
Buck Martinez and company pretty much managed to ignore the summarys of both the whipping boy and the Tin God.

That is exacatly the issue in Calgary – bar none. Generational has zero to do with it. – when the stability is there then hierarchy takes place and everyone falls into line. Al Davis’ Raiders organization when it was the standard bearer demontrated this and in recent history it was the New England Patriots. There are 9 teams and at the top everyone needs to know who is the man. This happened in B.C when Wally Buono stepped back and brought in Jeff Tedford. Tedford played in the CFL and ran a Pac-10 NCAA organization in Fresno. It is hardly… Read more »
