COMMENTARY – THE DAY THAT MADE HISTORY

A coupla three or four thoughts today, entering the weekend:

#1 – When all is said and done, this Edmonton Elks team is going to wind up being perhaps the story of the year in Canadian sports.

Already the owners of the pro sports record for the longest home losing streak at 21 games, the Elks added way more misery to themselves and their fans Thursday night by building up a 22-point lead in the second quarter on Winnipeg, only to blow it in the second half and lose 38-29.

Uh scratch that. Make it 22 straight home losses.

If I didn’t know those guys so well, I’d have no sympathy for them, like the rest of the CFL fans across the country. But I do.

#2 – Earlier this week the Elks announced an upcoming game will be broadcast in Blackfoot-Cree across the Windspeaker Radio Network here in Alberta. Just a couple of weeks ago, they had a game broadcast in Punjabi, also making history.

Great! Now you can listen to the Elks lose in three official languages.

(Hey … this isn’t kicking the Elks while they’re down; at least not in my eyes. If they want the jokes to stop, win a game!)

#3 – The 35th anniversary of the Gretzky Trade passed this week with no mention on this commentary, nor the RP Show on TV, radio & streaming.

It was Wednesday. Honestly I wasn’t purposely ignoring it; it just didn’t cross my mind and wouldn’t have if I hadn’t seen the 30 For 30 documentary airing on TSN that night.

Everyone’s got an opinion on that day – and how it changed sports forever – but it was also a turning point day for me.

It’s when I realized that I cheer for players rather than teams because I never cheer for the Oilers again after the day. Until then, I’d grown up an Edmonton fan.

And finally #4 – So that extends to tonight’s CFL clash between the Roughriders and Cody Fajardo’s Alouettes in Montreal.

By this virtue, I’ll be cheering for Cody in this one and for that matter, Alouettes head coach Jason Maas.

I’m sure you understand.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

Here’s hoping Jason Maas, Cody Fajardo Montreal Alouettes team show Jeremy O’Day Craig Dickinson and the rest of the Saskatchewan Roughriders organization what real football is all about, winning! In one short season of rebuilding the Alouettes are on the right path, no years and years of consistent losing like the Saskatchewan Roughriders franchise.
