REGINA – The Saskatchewan Roughriders and starting quarterback Cody Fajardo have agreed to a restructured contract for the 2022 season, the team announced Monday.

Fajardo threw for 2,970 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2021, helping the Roughriders to a 9-5 record. He added 468 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

Fajardo was the West Division’s outstanding player in 2019, his first with the club, when he threw for 4,302 yards and 18 touchdowns while rushing for 611 yards and another 10 touchdowns.

The California native signed a two-year contract extension in October of 2019 and extended his deal through 2022 in January of last year.

“Cody has always been the definition of a team player, and this is just another example of that,” Roughriders vice-president of football operations Jeremy O’Day said in a release. “His leadership both on and off the field has been a large part of our success, and we appreciate his team-first mentality as we head into the 2022 season.”

Also on Monday, the Roughriders signed defensive back Godfrey Onyeka and receiver Mitch Picton to contract extensions.

Both players are Canadian.

The six-foot-two, 200-pound Onyeka, of Brampton, Ont., had 24 tackles and seven special-teams tackles in nine regular-season games. He also suited up for the Riders’ 21-17 loss to Winnipeg in the West Division final.

The six-foot-two, 200-pound Picton had 25 catches for 218 yards and a TD over 10 regular-season games last season. Saskatchewan selected the Regina native in the fifth round, No. 37 overall, in the 2017 CFL draft out of the University of Regina.

Picton began his time with the Riders on the practice roster before appearing in two regular-season games in 2019.

lol, I noticed it’s his Boss saying he’s a team player. I don’t have social media, but safe to say Jesus Sprinkles didn’t post/tweet, “Hey Guys I just gave up untold thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars for a collection of stiffs because I’m a team player…” When a company comes to “restructure”, you say, “give me my release” and off you go. Ottawa, Hamilton, B.C, Edmonton need starting QBs. If you believe in yourself you demand respect and r.e.s.p.e.c.t is shown on payday. My boy Jim Harbaugh is showing that to Michigan. They made him take a paycut,… Read more »

Wow! So all the other CFL QBs who restructured their contracts are losers too??!! It’s the idiots in Calgary and BC who extremely overpaid BLM and Mike Reilly to screw the market up…….but supply, demand and quality set the market straight. Cody wants to win, so he did the right thing……simple. Win the Grey Cup at home. I’ve got my ticket!

You are right about one thing tho……Reynolds is useless, is way overpaid and has no business running ANYTHING! He’s an accountant……..all he knows how to do is spend…..accountants are trained to count beans, not run football teams…….

Hope it’s enough to sign Duke and a Right Tackle.
