FLAME TECH FOOTBALL FRIDAY RUNDOWN
Fridays are reserved for the gridiron and we tackled all the latest hot topics on Episode #429 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talkshow! Here’s the rundown:
- RP and Dupes kicked it off with The Warmup covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Thursday NHL leftovers (the cream has risen to the top in Canada – TOR, EDM & WPG, 2) It’s opening night in the WHL!, 3) The championship round opens at the Scotties, 4) NFL Notes: Russell Wilson’s trade list, Deshaun Watson’s trade request, J.J. Watt landing spots & Dak Prescott’s contract, 5) CFL Notes: Brandon Rutley & Ricky Collins Jr. retire plus more Argos hate, and 6) Canadian NFL prospect WR Joshua Palmer promises a Canadian wave into the NFL similar to the NBA.
- Hall of Fame Roughriders broadcaster John “Frenzy” Lynch appeared in the bunker and feels the CFL needs to institute a drop-dead date by the end of March for declaring a season. Rod feels they’re not in position to do that because there are too many moving parts and said players and staff will have to continue to dangle like yo-yos as the pandemic lingers.
- Dallas Cowboys voice Brad Sham joined the show and asked where he can purchase a Grey Cup hoodie like Rod was wearing? The host quipped, “Likely a garage sale!” The 42-year Cowboys play-by-play man covered all the NFL topics stating we’ll know where J.J. Watt will sign soon, and that Deshaun Watson will likely have no choice but to play for the Houston Texans this season. A flood of questions came in from viewers regarding the Cowboys and Brad answered them all including draft plans, Dak Prescott’s future (he feels he’ll sign the franchise tag for 2021 again), and said his favourite era of Cowboys football was the 1990s.
- The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Which will happen first in the NFL – Russell Wilson Trade, Deshaun Watson Trade, J.J. Watt signing or Dak Prescott signing? At press time, a Watt signing was leading.
- In Hour 2 we re-upped the Quick Six and then were joined by RP Show NFL Insider Tori Gurley. He predicts J.J. Watt will sign with the Green Bay Packers. Tori discussed all the NFL topics and promoted his Sunday Zoom call with college prospects and their families regarding NCAA recruitment with his company Homefield Advantage. Families can participate in the call for $40 and sign up through the link in Tori’s Instagram and Twitter bios.
- TSN CFL insider Dave Naylor joined the show for a league update. Nayls reported a 2-pronged approach coming from the CFL to the various levels of government. We’re in the first stage with the league making its initial proposal and having a head start with last year’s presentation plus a “handbook” from the NHL, NBA, NFL, MLS, etc. He feels the headaches will come when they turn their attention to getting fans into stadiums. Regarding veteran player retirements, Dave feels it’s simply a case of family men having to get on with their lives and get jobs to support their families. As far as the CFL playing in 2021, Naylor predicted a delayed, shortened season.
- The final two segments were devoted to Viewer Takeover and fans from all CFL teams weighed in heavily on the Toronto Argonauts’ signing free agency. Rod said it’s similar to the Jones/Murphy Rider era where Saskatchewan was active in free agency but cut veterans prior to the season. He alluded to 2018 when Rob Bagg, Chad Owens and Bakari Grant were cut coming out of training camp. The situation with the Argos is similar but he explained none of the Argos signings feel they’ll be the ones who are cut!
