FLAME TECH FOOTBALL FRIDAY RUNDOWN

GARRICK JONES

Fridays are reserved for football and we tackled all the hottest topics on Episode #369 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show! Here’s the rundown:

  • Rod and Dupes got it going with The Warmup for Four Seasons Sports Palace covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) RP’s Cowboys were humiliated 41-16 by Washington on U.S. Thanksgiving and he’s calling for the removal of head coach Mike McCarthy after the season, 2) The Houston Texans knocked off Detroit 41-25, 3) On this date in 2006 the Riders and Danny Barrett parted ways. RP noted that D.B.’s life has been on an upward trajectory ever since, 4) The Globe & Mail reports Rogers has a plan to tear down Rogers Centre and build a new home for the Blue Jays, 5) Should CFL salaries be made public?, and 6) There are nine NCAA football games on Friday however three have been cancelled.
  • Former NFL’er and CFL’er Garrick Jones joined the show from Houston for a wide-ranging chat. “The Commish” explained his campaign to become the next GM of the Texans, and also broke down Thursday’s NFL games. Garrick talked of the fondness for Danny Barrett with the Texans (he’s the team’s running backs coach) and predicted Detroit’s Matt Patricia and Chicago’s Matt Nagy are the next two NFL coaches to be fired.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Should CFL salaries be made public? At press time over 80% of respondents said yes.
  • Hall of Fame Rider broadcaster John Lynch joined the bunker and they debated the future of the CFL. RP contends that the CFL will be unrecognizable from what we’ve known when it comes back. Garrick Jones runs the Southern Development Football League and explained that there are thousands of American players who will play for almost nothing just to continue their careers and showcase their talents to the NFL. RP said that will be a major factor in the CFL’s salary structure moving forward.
  • Hour 2 was simulcast on Game+ TV and Facebook Live and after re-upping the Quick Six show topics, we were joined by RP Show NFL Insider Tori Gurley. The former Browns & Packers WR said the Cowboys will be reluctant to fire McCarthy because he’s in Year 1 of a 5-year deal. The panel explored all the NFL coaches currently on the hot seat, and Tori gave his weekly Tori’s Tips fantasy advice for Week 12 presented by Wheaton Kia and Fanduel. Being a former Argo, Tori discussed playing at Rogers Centre and that his worst games came when the roof was open! (The glare of the sun).
  • With the new Covid restrictions introduced across prairie provinces this week, viewers were anxious to get the panel’s opinions on how they’ll affect sports. RP observed that the World Junior Hockey Championships will assuredly be played because they’re Canada’s answer to U.S. college football and with the financial backing of Hockey Canada, TSN and the IIHF, there’s too much at stake not to play.
  • Viewers were also eager to discuss the implosion of Rogers Centre and Rod said that while the facility was state-of-the-art when it opened on June 3, 1989 – and was North America’s first retractable roof – every venue has a lifespan. The fact is it’s nothing more than an inanimate object, and time marches on. Rod delved into the Globe & Mail story and noted that the proposed new Jays stadium will not be NFL-ready, as was feared.
  • RP and Dupes Faced Off on Saturday’s Mike Tyson-Roy Jones Jr prize fight on PPV for Ultimate Fan Zone and The Mad Greek Restaurant in Moose Jaw. RP said it’s not worth watching due to all the restrictions imposed while Darren disagreed.
