FOOTBALL FRIDAY RECAP: BOBBY DYCE JOINS!
It was a gridiron special on Friday’s RP Show! Here are the highlights of Episode 163:
- Rod and Dupes opened with The Rollout for Flooring Superstores. They touched on each of Rod’s Elite 8 show topics which were: 1) TD Atlantic featuring Riders/Argos, 2) Is Willie Jefferson the CFL’s #1 free agent?, 3) Is it a concern the Riders haven’t named their coaching staff yet?, 4) Jonathan Jennings cut by the RedBlacks, 5) The Collaros/Nichols debate, 6) Chris Streveler to the NFL?, 7) Super Bowl LIV, 49ers/Chiefs, 8) Chris Jones is staying in Cleveland. Will he ever leave the NFL?
- RP Show Director of Scouting Craig Smith and Hall of Fame Rider broadcaster John Lynch joined the bunker for the rest of the show, discussing all of these topics. With CFL free agency opening February 11, the guys identified their priority free agents. Rod’s #1 player is Nick Arbuckle while Smitty’s is Shaq Evans (with Cam Judge as 1B). Viewers and listeners voted for Willie Jefferson by a wide margin on the Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre daily poll.
- Ottawa RedBlacks special teams coordinator Bob Dyce joined the show for a fascinating chat. He said Arbuckle had a tour of the RedBlacks facility this week, and they are hoping to sign him. He talked about former RedBlack Diontae Spencer, now of the Denver Broncos. Bobby also recalled the pressure on the 2013 Riders as Grey Cup hosts, and the events surrounding the 2015 firing of Corey Chamblin and Brendan Taman.
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Bryant Mitchell joined the show from Florida via video chat. He picked the 49ers to win Super Bowl LIV but said he could change his mind next week. Mitchell discussed his 4 seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos, and gave advice for CFLers signing in the NFL (get on special teams!).
- 3x Grey Cup champion Ryan Thelwell joined the show from Calgary and discussed his 10-year CFL career. Craig Smith signed him with the BC Lions way back in 2000, where the pair won a championship together. Thelwell had lots to say about his CFL career, including how a Jamaica product survived CFL cold weather games (“I still don’t know how I did it,” Thelwell said).
- On the other topics, Craig Smith figures Chris Jones won’t come back to the CFL and also figures Chris Streveler will sign in the NFL.
