FOOTBALL FRIDAY RECAP: DRAFT LEFTOVERS AND A PLAYER TAKEOVER!

WASHINGTON-MACMILLAN

Football Friday was a Canadian football fan’s dream with more big name guests and excellent coverage! Here the highlights from Episode #225 of The Rod Pedersen Show:

  • Rod and Dupes opened with The Rollout for Flooring Superstore covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) CFL Draft takeaways (It was an exciting night!), 2) Is there an early Draft winner?, 3) Recapping a solid Rider draft with 2 OL, 1 WR, 1 LB, 1 DL, 1 RB and 1 DB, 4) The CFL Federal aid story isn’t going away, 5) Will there be a statement from Canada West on Friday regarding the 2020 season? That was the rumour, and 6) NFL Notes: Dalton, Rodgers, etc.
  • The guys had fun debating the winners and losers of the 2020 CFL Draft. Rod said from a purely “sizzle” perspective, the BC Lions won by grabbing the #1 pick and taking Canadian QB Nathan Rourke. Viewers chimed in with their thoughts on TSN’s Draft production and both Rod and Dupes agreed that it rivalled the NFL Draft from a “look” perspective.
  • Hall of Fame Rider broadcaster John “Frenzy” Lynch joined the show via phone from his palatial South Regina estate for his weekly appearance. He confirmed reports that he was indeed walking shirtless through South Regina Thursday evening, amid 27 degree Celsius conditions. Lynch reported that the ladies loved it. Frenzy gave his thoughts on the Rider draft; he loved the selection of Huskies lineman Mattland Riley in the first round. Not surprisingly John is in favour of the CFL receiving funding from the Federal government and doesn’t understand why anyone would oppose it. The panel debated the merits of having either a positive or negative outlook on the CFL’s future and Lynch said some people are just happy being unhappy.
  • TSN Krown Gridiron Nation co-host and BC football coach Gord Randall joined the show from Vancouver for a comprehensive Draft recap. He feels strongly that the Calgary Stampeders are the early winners. Gord answered a plethora of questions from viewers and explained why players either rose, or fell, in the selection process.
  • The football talk continued into Hour 2 as Montreal Alouettes offensive tackle Tony Washington joined the show from his home in Montreal. He reported that he’s like every other pro athlete; staying in shape and hoping for the best. He clarified that he is NOT the Alouettes CFLPA player rep (John Bowman is) but said he wished there was more communication between the CFL and CFLPA at this time. Tony feels that Als QB Vernon Adams Jr. is a very capable “franchise face” and also discussed the quick turnaround of his team under head coach Khari Jones. Washington said he was very glad to appear on the show, as he’s wanted to for quite some time.
  • Ottawa RedBlacks offensive lineman Nolan MacMillan joined the show and revealed that he’s living the dream, playing for the RedBlacks as an Ottawa-area boy. He discussed the franchise’s ups and downs in his time with the team, and is very optimistic with new head coach Paul LaPolice and new QB Nick Arbuckle. Nolan then got into his controversial Tweets this week where he stated the CFL needs to do a better job of marketing its players and that the cancellation of CFL Week was “a joke”. Rod observed that Nolan is extremely well-spoken and asked what his major was at Iowa. MacMillan reported that he studied Philosophy and Business.
  • The guys had a fun time discussing TSN’s Friday Night Football schedule of a doubleheader featuring the 2009 and 2010 Grey Cups (both Montreal wins over Saskatchewan). Rod asked what an adequate name for the programming would be and one viewer chimed in with, “Netflix Night in Saskatchewan”.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Who will be the best non-1st rounder from the CFL Draft?: Nathan Rourke, Carter O’Donnell, Neville Gallimore or Ketel Asse? The leader at press time is Rider draftee Neville Gallimore, a 3rd round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL Draft.
  • You can vote now on our Twitter poll for the Rockstar of the Day for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions. The leader at press time, again, was John Frenzy.

Pon further review I’ve just come to the realization that thw Winnipeg Blue Bombers without a first round 2020 draft pick drafted far superior players than the Saskatchewan Roughriders. True.

This was a deep draft & the 2nd year under the O’Day regime, we’ve had only 13 picks & only 3 in the 1st 3 rounds. We picked three 6’5″ish receivers on our 1st 4 picks. Considering we may only be playing 1 National receiver & we still have Picton, Lavoie among the 3 beanpoles, a bit of overkill I think. Another OL pick in round 4 would have been better as there were THREE 3DonwNation top 25 rated OL still available when we opted for a DB in ROUND 5 to presumably line up behind Edem & Bouka.
