FOOTBALL FRIDAY RECAP: PINBALL CLEMONS JOINS!
We had a huge guest list for Episode #243 of The Rod Pedersen Show! Here are the highlights:
- Rod and Dupes opened with The Rollout for Flooring Superstore covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The CFL Hub Cities concept seems to be gaining steam, 2) Sportsnet’s Arash Madani reports two CFL teams aren’t in favour of playing in 2020, 3) ESPN says the Cowboys Mike McCarthy is the NFL head coach with the most pressure in 2020. Who faces the most in the CFL?, 4) Twitter is ablaze with the George Floyd situation, 5) The CFL/Spring League proposed partnership, and 6) Will there be an issue with the CFLPA regarding Returning To Play?
- TSN’s Dave Naylor reports a Western Canadian, non-CFL market has been discussed as a Hub City. The panel and viewers tried to guess which it is and the suggestions were Saskatoon, Fort McMurray, Kelowna and Kamloops.
- Hall of Fame Rider broadcaster John Frenzy joined the bunker in Segment 2 and talked about this week’s interview with Warren Moon. Frenzy guessed that Moon is the only member of BOTH the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Canadian Football Hall of Fame. After checking with the CFHOF, we learned that only Moon and Bud Grant hold that distinction. Frenzy talked about how devastating life would be without CFL this summer, and coaches on the hot seat.
- The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Which CFL head coach faces the most pressure in 2020 – Craig Dickenson, Orlondo Steinauer, Ryan Dinwiddie or Rick Campbell? At press time, Dinwiddie was leading the vote on both Twitter and Facebook.
- Toronto Argonauts GM Mike “Pinball” Clemons joined the show from his Toronto home and explained why he took the job after originally turning it down twice. The Hall of Famer addressed the naysayers who say he has no experience as a CFL GM and he laughed, “They’re right”. He talked about going from player-to-coach within a week back in 2000, constructing the Argos roster, why they hired Ryan Dinwiddie, and explained how he got the nickname “Pinball”. (Argos coach Bob O’Billovich gave him the moniker as a rookie back in 1989).
- In Hour 2 we were joined by 2-time Grey Cup champion Yo Murphy from his gym in Tampa, FL. The NFL, CFL, XFL and NFL Europe vet discussed winning Grey Cups in 1994 and 2007, and his crazy journey in between. Yo trains elite athletes now and explained that it’s his way to Pay It Forward in sports, and try to make a difference in the world.
- The WHL lined up an interview with Kamloops goalie Dylan Garand – the WHL Scholastic Player of the Year – and he joined the show from his home in Victoria. He discussed having the Blazers’ season cut short, the outlook for 2020-21, winning the Scholastic Award, and much more.
- Roxann and Darnell Therres of RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions were in studio and presented Frenzy with the first Rockstar of the Day ball cap which will be awarded to each day’s winner. Frenzy has won it multiple times. You can vote now on Friday’s poll on Twitter. At press time, Pinball Clemons was leading.
- The MySask 411 App Business of the Week was RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions, as they had Directwest build the company’s website and social media platforms.
