FOOTBALL FRIDAY RECAP: S.J. GREEN, LANCE FRAZIER AND MORE!

It turned out to be a pretty wild day on Episode #268 of The RP Show! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod and Dupes opened with The Rollout for Flooring Superstores covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) RP discussed the story he broke Thursday afternoon on TSN 1290 Winnipeg that Winnipeg will be the CFL’s Hub City IF there’s a 2020 season, and the confirmation by TSN’s Dave Naylor, 2) CFL SIM Thursday Night Football’s game saw BC upset Saskatchewan 16-11, 3) Cam Newton’s New England deal is worth a base of $550,000, 4) Tom Brady says “Football is fun again” in Tampa Bay, 5) ESPN’s Paul Finebaum expects the NCAA Football season to be delayed if it starts at all, and 6) More on the NFL Canada concept. (It started out as spitballing on the RP Show and has grown into a monster).
  • Hall of Fame Rider broadcaster John “Frenzy” Lynch joined the bunker in Segment 2. The panel debated the Winnipeg Hub City story and Frenzy feels it’s a coup for the Blue Bombers if true. He feels CFL fans would flock to Winnipeg even if the games were held without fans in attendance (tailgating, etc). The guys brushed on some NFL issues, and whom will write a cheque to support the CFL (Federal government, the NFL or the fans).
  • Former Roughriders and Dallas Cowboys DB Lance Frazier joined the show from Delaware and he discussed coaching youth football during the pandemic. Lance said all their team meetings have been held via video conference, but there’s no substitute for on-field gatherings. The WVU product explained the similarities between playing for the Cowboys and Roughriders and huffed that both teams built new stadiums only after he left! He also told stories from the 2007 Rider Grey Cup run and said it was a thrill to have his family in attendance in Toronto to see Saskatchewan beat Winnipeg 23-19.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Would you want your city to be a hub venue for sports leagues? Over 60% of respondents said yes.
  • News broke during the show that the CFL is denying Rod’s report about Winnipeg being selected as the Hub City. RP quipped, “What else are they going to say?” He explained that he and CFL leaders view topics like this differently; Rod feels the hype is good for the league while others do not. For instance, TSN’s Bob McKenzie has been reporting on NHL Hub Cities for months without confirmation from the NHL.
  • Super Bowl and Grey Cup champ-turned-TV-star Brandon London joined the show from Virginia. He reflected on his road through football (noting his father Mike and Marc Trestman as the biggest influences) and said he got into the TV industry while rehabbing an injury. London hosts NY Giants TV and the Daily Blast.
  • CFL great S.J. Green joined the show from the Tampa area and said he has no expectations on when, or if, the CFL season will resume. However he admitted that time’s ticking and he may need to look at other work options. S.J. revealed that he is a free agent and whenever the next season will be, it’ll be his last. Green talked about his time in the XFL with the Tampa Bay Vipers and compared his Grey Cup victories with the Alouettes and Argos. RP asked whom he’d pick at QB for a one game showdown: Anthony Calvillo or Ricky Ray? S.J. laughed and said he’d prefer not to answer!
  • Rod and Dupes closed the show discussing Thursday night’s CFL SIM broadcast which attracted 9,000 viewers at press time. The numbers continue to climb from fans watching the replay. The Riders came out of the game at 2-1 while the Lions improved to 1-3.
