FRIDAY COMMENTARY – THERE WILL ALWAYS BE FOOTBALL
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 FM & Rock 98.5 FM)
ONE OF THE GREAT THINGS ABOUT FOOTBALL IS THAT IT’S A MICROCOSM OF LIFE.
THERE’S PLENTY OF EVIDENCE OF THAT, BUT FOR TODAY I’M GOING TO DRAW THE PARALLEL FOR THE LONG ROAD OUT OF THE PANDEMIC. IT’S GOING TO BE LONG FOR SOCIETY, AND IT’S GOING TO BE LONG FOR CANADIAN FOOTBALL.
ASSUMING THE CFL GETS ONTO THE FIELD THIS YEAR, IT’LL LOOK A LOT DIFFERENT FROM THE LAST TIME WE SAW THEM. A LOT OF THE FAMILIAR FACES OF PLAYERS, COACHES AND STAFF ARE GONE, AS CASUALTIES OF THE PANDEMIC.
WE’VE HEARD PRESCIOUS LITTLE DETAILS OF HOW THE RETURN TO PLAY WILL LOOK, BUT WE ALL REMEMBER THE PAYCUTS PROPOSED ON TOP OF PAYCUTS BACK IN THE WINTER TIME. (WE HAVEN’T HEARD A PEEP ABOUT IF THE PLAYERS HAVE BEEN FORMALLY PROPOSED THIS, NOR WHAT THEIR VOTE WILL BE).
AND ASSUMING THEY GET ONTO THE FIELD, YOU HAVE TO WONDER FOR HOW LONG THE CFL REMAINS AS WE KNOW IT?
RIDER PUNTER AND REGINA FAVOURITE SON JON RYAN HAD SOME GREAT QUOTES IN THE LEADER POST SAYING THE LEAGUE IS FORGETTING THE “C” IN CANADIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE, AND THAT HE’S DEATHLY AFRAID FOR THE CFL’S FUTURE.
I WISH I DIDN’T KNOW AS MUCH ABOUT BUSINESS AS I DO. BUT THE CONCEPT OF “YOU NEED MORE MONEY COMING IN THAN GOING OUT” ISN’T THAT HARD FOR ANYONE TO GRASP.
THEY SAY CFL LEADERS AND EVEN COMMISSIONER RANDY AMBROSIE ARE BULLISH ON THE MERGER WITH THE XFL BUT AS TIME HAS GONE ON, THERE’S BEEN PLENTY MORE BACKLASH TO THE NOTICE OF CHANGING ANYTHING CANADIAN IN THE GAME.
THE GUYS WHOM ARE CLINGING TO THE WHAT THE CFL HAS BEEN FOR 100 YEARS AND CONTINUALLY BASH THE XFL JUST DON’T GRASP THAT THE BUSINESS IS DYING. OR HAS BEEN ALLOWED TO DIE.
BUT THERE WILL ALWAYS BE FOOTBALL. A CHAT WITH REGINA MINOR FOOTBALL BOSS LEN ANTONINI THIS WEEK CONFIRMED THAT REGISTRATION IS UP, AND KIDS STILL WANT TO BE THE NEXT CODY FAJARDO. OR THE NEXT CHASE CLAYPOOL.
FOOTBALL WILL ULTIMATELY BE FINE IN THIS COUNTRY. HOWEVER THERE’S NOT ONE PERSON WHO CAN GUARANTEE YOU HOW IT’S GOING TO LOOK IN A COUPLE OF YEARS.
THAT’S TODAY’S ROD PEDERSEN COMMENTARY
I have been at games since 1982 and there was a period of time when I was buying tickets in the 1990s and I had to say, “Well, I made the rent, but I’ll buy the tickets and postpone the Cable Regina and Phone Bill.” I’m qualified to speak on this. The CFL that I love – that’s long gone. I used to love Stampede Wrestling too. Things end. This is the CANADIAN public’s appreciation for CFL football. Since 2012 it’s a slow decline and Duron Carter said it best. To paraphrase quit phony pretending people love this league. If… Read more »
The CFL is crispino? Guess Ill have to start watching soccer.
If you are not in the demographic of 18-35 frankly get lost as you would not be anyone remotely needed for a new league.
Watching soccer and crap that is go ahead. That tells me you’re not buying a ticket anyway.
Cheers or Eh fanculo
Get lost, make me! Not happening bubba.
