FRIDAY COMMENTARY – THREE THINGS

A coupla three thoughts headed into the weekend:

First, Junior Hockey doesn’t make a lot of waves during the summer but Thursday’s news that Brad Herauf has been named the 43rd coach of the Regina Pats has the hockey world talking.

The fans don’t know him, but the hockey people do and as far as I’m concerned, this is a fantastic hire.

Some talk smack about Herauf, but those people talk smack about everybody. Brad’s a Regina kid, an Estevan Bruins great, had a good pro career, and has a real blossoming coaching resume including taking the Pat Canadians to the Telus Cup.

The Pats are going to be bad so even hiring Paul Maurice wouldn’t have made a difference.

Let “The Hauf” grow with this group. Being a local boy will buy him lots of cred with the fans; although at age 40, he’s not a kid.

Secondly, early in the season the CFL has been split into three distinct groups: The Great, The Good & The Ugly.

The great are BC, Toronto & Winnipeg, the good are Sask, Calgary and Montreal and the ugly are Hamilton, Ottawa and Edmonton. And after their 20th straight home loss last night, if there was a category uglier than ugly, the Elks would be in it.

And lastly, the second half of the MLB season opens tonight with the Blue Jays home to Arizona. Frankly, I don’t recall a season in many years where I’ve watched Canada’s Team with as much interest at this point in the season.

Despite some pretty significant turmoil in the first half, Toronto’s managed to sit third in the AL East and hold the final wildcard playoff spot as the post-All Star schedule kicks off.

Their opponents tonight, the Diamondbacks,  in an NL playoff spot so this weekend’s series should be a good measuring stick.

Okay Blue Jays … let’s play ball.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

Why would anyone criticize Brad as the Head Coach? Oh my guess is typical Hockey Regina people – most likely he ran a few through the boards in a pee wee/bantam tryout thus ending their dream of making the show and now at age 40 they sit in a Crown Corp cubicle. Their daily highlight is to get in the meddle coffin and head to SaskPower etc, and sit in a stall in the washroom reading this blog. Always remember – a civil servant in Saskatchewan be it a Crown Corp, Public Service, Cop, etc., does nothing, and after 40… Read more »

To be fair, Brad probably speared a few in the nuts too 😉

I wish him well. They’ll work and that will play well with the public.

Brad is a lame duck coach.. he’ll be gone before they get good again. It’s too bad, they could have been ready to compete this year if paddock would have traded Bedard. Smh.. that will set the Pats back at least 5 years.

It sounds like you are a former disgruntled Provincial employee who was fired. Having the inappropriate name Jerry Butler must be a b*tch.
