A coupla three or more thoughts entering the weekend …

#1 – Variety is the spice of life they say! I concur. And there’s plenty of sports for your viewing pleasure beginning tonight and taking you through the weekend. The Toronto Blue Jays begin their American League title defense as they host the soon-to-be Las Vegas Athletics at Rogers Centre. What more is to be said? Be sure you tune in to see the banner raising.

#2 – I know it may not tickle your fancy, but March Madness is down to the Sweet 16 and sports fans are settling in for a full day of action today. 73-year old Rick Pittino has St. John’s into the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1999 and today they face #1-ranked Duke.

Winners win folks. And losers lose.

#3 – Canada’s March Madness is the junior hockey playoffs and there are two things I miss about working in the Dub: the west coast trip, and the playoffs. It’s a full slate of games tonight so if you’re in one of those markets, I urge you to get a ticket and check it out.

And #4 – NHL. The Oilers beat the Golden Knights in overtime last night in a potential playoff preview. It’s not necessarily the best homestretch of all time, but it’s as good as any in history! Meanwhile here in Florida last night the Panthers lost 3-2 to Minnesota with the Wild scoring with under five seconds to go to win. It was the latest game-winner in Wild history. While Florida hasn’t been eliminated officially, Matthew Tkachuk said afterwards they don’t expect to make he playoffs and to be honest, I appreciate the realness.

Now the Cats go on the road for a pair in New York this weekend: Saturday at the Islanders and Sunday at the Rangers. I’m happy to say I’ll be at both games.

Because … why not? Singer Ricky Nelson sang it best: you can’t please everyone, so you gotta please yourself.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.

Great stuff and all true 1) Ricky Nelson/Rick Nelson was a made for TV entity created by his father Ozzie Nelson. They had the 1950s show Ozzie & Harriet. Think 1950s lore, but by the 1970s Rick & The Stone Canyon Band was equal to The Eagles. Unfortunately, they couldn’t see him as anything other than his 1950s version. The lesson is you can’t go back in time, and hence if you’re going to play a Garden Party (Madison Square Garden) “When I got to the garden party They all knew my name No one recognized me I didn’t look… Read more »

The season hasn’t even started and I’m already sick of the Canadian media’s blind love affair with Vladdy. You’d think he plays all nine positions.

Vaddy, he’s a top notch pitcher, people just don’t know it.
