FRIDAY RUNDOWN: FLAME TECH FOOTBALL FRIDAY
There were a couple of huge breaking news items on Friday and we covered ’em live on Episode #420 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show! Here’s the rundown:
- Rod and Dupes kicked it off with The Warmup for Four Seasons Sports Palace covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) J.J. Watt and the Houston Texans announce a mutual split (Rod quipped that it’s never mutual), 2) CFL free agency winners, 3) 2021 Grey Cup favourites, 4) Have the Riders received bad press this week as 3DownNation’s insiders suggest?, 5) Thursday NHL leftovers, and 6) The Raptors lose in Boston.
- RP Show NFL Insider Tori Gurley joined the show to breakdown all the news. He agreed that no player ever wants to be released and doubts the Watt/Texans situation was mutual. Tori predicts Watt will land with the Green Bay Packers, as a Wisconsin product. The former Packers/Browns/Argos WR discussed the pending QB carousel in the NFL off-season and who may land where. Regarding the CFL, Tori’s a big backer of Edmonton’s and Toronto’s moves.
- Hall of Fame Roughriders broadcaster John Frenzy gave a grade to each CFL team’s free agency moves and he gave the Riders an A+.
- In Hour 2 we re-upped the Quick Six and then were joined by new Edmonton Football Team head coach Jaime Elizondo. He admitted that he’d planned to get on with “life after football” after the XFL folded however the game called him back. He was the offensive coordinator with Marc Trestman’s Tampa Bay Vipers. Regarding being pro football’s first-ever Mexican-born coach, Elizondo said it’s something he’s extremely proud of and that growing up in Mexico and El Paso, he never spoke any English until he was five years old! He also said he’s very optimistic about Edmonton’s chances given all the talent they’ve assembled. Jaime famously tossed Rod out of Ottawa RedBlacks practices TWICE and the pair shared a laugh over it. Rod said he was only having fun in those situations and Jaime agreed, saying he appreciated Rod understanding the covert nature of CFL teams’ day-before walkthroughs. Elizondo chuckled that he can’t wait to through Rod out of practice again!
- The Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Where will J.J. Watt land – Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Another AFC South team, or Other? At press time, Other was leading.
- News broke near the end of the show that the Saskatchewan government has approved a WHL East Division Return To Play in March with a 24-game schedule. Rod and Dupes celebrated and said this is exciting news!

The big news today, Rod, was Gerry Moddejonge in Edmonton’s article “The Green & Gold Canary” & no, it’s not the new team name. This was also carried on 3Downnation.
(HOMER_ John Frenzy grading CFL free agency team moves and giving the Roughriders A+ when they are actually a solid D minus. Ask a HOMER for his/her opinion and you’ll always get a HOMER answer. Anyways, all for naught as the 2021 CFL season cancelled_ just like 2020, sorry John Frenzy, no football soon.
