FRIDAY SHOW RECAP: FOOTBALL FRIDAY!

DUNK05222020

We tackled all of the latest football issues (CFL, NFL & U-Sport) on Episode #239 of The Rod Pedersen Show with more great guests. Here are the highlights!

  • Rod and Dupes opened with The Rollout for Flooring Superstore covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The CFL Ultimate QB using bits and pieces from current CFL QBs, 2) Is the NHL returning to play? (Rod’s NHL insider said the 24-team playoff will begin August 1, 3) The Dallas Cowboys are in the news everyday, 4) Riders sign LB Deon Lacey, 5) CFL forms a medical committee for Return To Play, and 6) How much optimism is there that sports leagues are returning to play sooner than later? (Rod cautioned that he’ll believe it when he sees it).
  • On the Ultimate QB topic, here were Rod’s: Best Arm – Trevor Harris, Best Feet – Bo Levi Mitchell, Best Football IQ – Zach Collaros, Best Swagger – Mike Reilly, Best Leadership – Cody Fajardo. Viewers were encouraged to write in with theirs.
  • Hall of Fame Rider broadcaster John “Frenzy” Lynch made his triumphant return to the bunker after spending the last 2 months joining the show by phone. He talked about the struggles the CFL’s facing and said they simply have to get games in in 2020. Frenzy is on the Riders’ Plaza of Honour selection committee and explained the criteria for induction. Rod asked why former GM Roy Shivers isn’t in the Plaza but Lynch didn’t want to talk about that.
  • Famed CFL referee Kim Murphy joined the show from the Niagara Region in Ontario and talked about the current issues the league is facing. “I didn’t think that when I retired, everyone else would too,” he said tongue-in-cheek. Kim told more stories and answered viewer questions about controversial calls in his career, proposed rule changes and much more. He also said he currently has no association with the CFL but would like to become involved again after observing a break. Kim also said he had to throw an Objectionable Conduct flag on Dupes for dropping an F-bomb on Thursday’s show!
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Should Andy Fantuz be in the Plaza Of Honour? Over 70% of respondents said yes. Lynch admitted that since Andy left the Riders in free agency for Hamilton, that will affect consideration for his induction.
  • Edmonton Eskimos lineman Jacob Ruby joined the show from his home in London, ON and said he’s having no problems keeping busy due to his two off-field businesses and two young children. He gave his Ultimate QB suggestions and picked Trevor Harris for the majority of categories. Jacob fielded many questions from viewers which included CFLers Calvin McCarty and Shawn Lemon, and explained his Twitter spat with The Rock earlier this spring.
  • 3DownNation CFL Insider Justin Dunk joined the show to breakdown the CFL’s newly-formed medical committee and examined the obstacles the league faces in getting back on the field. He also discussed whether players will be willing to play for less money (he feels it’s too early to tell) and said all league stakeholders will need to come together to make it happen. He encouraged viewers to check out 3DownNation.com this weekend as they are putting together a list of the top Canadian draft prospects for 2021.

No surprise Ruby picked Harris for most categories. Best arm? Are we talking accuracy or strength? Reilly has my vote for best arm strength & extremely accurate on long throws. Why all West QB’s? Best feet? if we’re talking escapability, BLM rarely leaves the pocket. I’d go for an East QB here with Adams. But Fajardo & Masoli would be high too. Best leadership. Sorry, Fajardo has 1 year as a starter, no Grey Cups. Mitchell takes this one I think based upon his winning % which is near the top all-time over an extended period of time. And he… Read more »

Fair enough, Rod. I’ll go along with that. And WHY did you vote for your mortal enemy in ANY category? LOL.
