MONDAY CAT COUNTRY COMMENTARY – HERE COMES THE PAIN
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary at 9:50 am and 5:20 pm on Cat Country 98 FM)
THE DOMINOES ARE FALLING.
I HAD A FEELING THAT SPORTSNET ARASH MADANI’S FRIDAY REPORT THAT MULTIPLE PRIVATELY-OWNED CFL TEAMS DON’T WANT TO PLAY IN 2020 WOULD SET OFF A CHAIN REACTION OF EVENTS.
IT DID.
FRIDAY NIGHT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT INFORMED THE CFL IT WON’T BE PROVIDING A 30-MILLION DOLLAR INTEREST-FREE LOAN BUT DIRECTED THEM TO APPLY FOR OTHER GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS DESIGNED FOR COMPANIES HURT BY THE PANDEMIC.
THAT’S AKIN TO THE MIDDLE FINGER.
SO NOW … WE’RE TOLD THE CFL BOARD OF GOVERNORS IS MEETING TODAY TO DECIDE WHAT TO DO WITH THE 2020 SEASON SINCE OTTAWA ISN’T GOING TO PAY FOR IT.
THAT’S THE NEXT DOMINO TO FALL, AND WE ALL EXPECT THEY’LL PULL THE PLUG ON THE SEASON.
AFTER THAT, CFL OBSERVERS – AND TEAM STAFF ALIKE – ARE ANTICIPATING A WAVE OF LAYOFFS ACROSS THE NINE TEAMS AND LEAGUE OFFICE IN TORONTO.
IT’S BEEN SIX MONTHS OF LIMBO, AND NOW THE REAL PAIN IS ABOUT TO START.
THIS IS A TRAUMATIC AND TRAGIC TIME FOR THE CANADIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE AND WE FEEL FOR EVERYBODY INVOLVED.
IF ONLY THERE WAS A SPORTS CONGLOMERATE IN THIS COUNTRY WORTH BILLIONS THAT COULD SWOOP IN AND SAVE THE DAY, AND TAKEOVER THE CFL FOR PENNIES ON THE DOLLAR.
THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO HMMMM ….
THAT’S TODAY’S ROD PEDERSEN COMMENTARY ON CAT COUNTRY 98.
