MONDAY COMMENTARY – DECISION DAY

IT’S THE DAY WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR.

THE CFL BOARD OF GOVERNORS IS SCHEDULED TO VOTE TODAY VIA CONFERENCE CALL ON KICKING OFF THE 2021 SEASON ON AUGUST 5.

IF YOU’RE LIKE ME, YOU’RE FAIRLY CONFUSED BY THIS.

DIDN’T THEY ANNOUNCE MONTHS AGO THAT THEY’D BE KICKING OFF ON AUGUST 5? WHAT’S THE NEED FOR A VOTE?

BUT WHATEVER. I’M LONG PAST LOOKING A GIFT HORSE IN THE MOUTH. I DON’T UNDERSTAND GOVERNANCE AND IT’S ONE OF A MILLION REASONS WHY I’LL NEVER BE RUNNING A TEAM. DON’T WANT TO.

I’M JUST A HICK STUMPLE-JUMPER WHO WAS BORN IN A BARN, NOT ONE OF THESE BIG CITY GUYS WITH THEIR FANCY SUITS AND FAT CIGARS.

BUT IN THE INSTANCE OF THIS VOTE, IF YOU’VE BEEN FOLLOWING IT, IT SEEMS EVEN MORE COMPLEX. SOMEWHERE I READ THEY NEED 6 OF 9 TEAMS TO VOTE IN FAVOUR OF PLAYING FOR THE MOTION TO BE CARRIED.

HOWEVER THE REPORT FROM LAST SUMMER’S VOTE SAID THE RESULT WAS 6-3 TO PLAY, BUT THEY STILL ENDED UP NOT PLAYING?

THIS TIME AROUND, TSN’S DAVE NAYLOR IS REPORTING THAT HE EXPECTS A UNANIMOUS VOTE BUT EVEN IF IT’S 8-1, THE OTHER EIGHT TEAMS WILL PUT ENOUGH PRESSURE ON THE LAST TEAM TO PLAY.

SO DO YOU NEED SIX “YES’S” OR EIGHT?

AND IF WE KNOW AHEAD OF TIME WHAT THE VOTE’S GOING TO BE, WHY EVEN HAVE ONE AT ALL?

BUT AGAIN, THAT’S WHY I DON’T DEAL IN THIS STUFF AND AM SIMPLY LIKE YOU … AWAITING THE RESULTS OF TODAY’S VOTE.

ALOUETTES PLAYER JOHN BOWMAN SAID HE’D LIKE TO SEE TODAY’S CONFERENCE CALL TELEVISED NATIONALLY, SO THAT ANY “NO” VOTERS CAN’T HIDE. IT SOUNDS GREAT, BUT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN.

IN FACT WE DON’T KNOW EXACTLY WHEN THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE RESULTS WILL ACTUALLY TAKE PLACE? MY GUESS IS AROUND NOON, GIVE OR TAKE AN HOUR OR TWO.

IT’S AN HISTORIC DAY IN THE HISTORY OF THE CANADIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE.

TAKE NOTE OF WHERE YOU ARE WHEN YOU FIND OUT.
