MONDAY COMMENTARY – RECAPPING THE WEEKEND

SOME MONDAY RANDOM THOUGHTS COMING OUT OF THE WEEKEND …

ALL SEVEN WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE EAST DIVISION TEAMS HAVE ENTERED THE HUB CENTRE OF REGINA, BEING HOUSED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF REGINA.

FROM SOCIAL MEDIA VIDEOS, IT APPEARS YOU CAN REASONABLY CALL IT A “BUBBLE” BECAUSE HEALTH CARE WORKERS ARE ON SITE SHOVING Q-TIPS DOWN PLAYERS THROATS WHILE DRESSED LIKE ASTRONAUTS.

IT’S CLEAR THIS IS A VERY SECURE ENVIRONMENT.

I’VE HEARD RUMBLINGS – ALBEIT MILD – THAT SOME PLAYERS ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE FOOD.

MY INITIAL THOUGHTS ON THAT ARE THESE: 1) MOM’S NOT HERE TO COOK FOR YOU ANYMORE, AND 2) YOU’RE WELCOME TO LEAVE AT ANYTIME. THERE ARE LITERALLY A THOUSAND PLAYERS WHO WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOUR SPOT.

WE DON’T HAVE TIME FOR THIS.

MEANWHILE THE ENDING OF THE SCOTTIES WAS ANTI-CLIMACTIC. WITH SASKATCHEWAN OUT OF THE RUNNING, I WAS CHEERING FOR PERSONAL FRIEND RACHEL HOMAN AND HER TEAM ONTARIO AGAINST KERRI EINARSON’S TEAM CANADA.

IN THE TIED 10TH END, RACHEL NEEDED TO DRAW TO THE BUTTON – OR AT BEST THE 4-FOOT – TO GIVE HERSELF A SHOT AT EXTENDING THE GAME OR MAYBE EVEN WINNING. UNFORTUNATELY SHE BLEW IT RIGHT THROUGH THROUGH THE HOUSE AND IT WAS GAME OVER. THAT ONE WILL STING FOR AWHILE.

STILL, IT WAS A MIRACULOUS WEEK IN THE CALGARY BUBBLE AND NEXT UP IS THE BRIER.

AND FINALLY WE’RE EAGER TO HEAR THE LATEST FROM THE CFL THIS WEEK REGARDING THE COMMISSIONER’S BOMBSHELL ON FRIDAY THAT IT’S GOING TO COST AT LEAST $1-MILLION PER TEAM FOR TESTING SHOULD THEY PLAY IN 2021.

MY NFL FRIENDS HAVE TOLD ME TESTING WAS “EXPENSIVE EVEN BY NFL STANDARDS” FOR THEM LAST SEASON.

THESE ARE TRULY THE LONGEST ODDS THE CFL HAS EVER FACED
