MONDAY COMMENTARY – THE GOOD, THE GREAT & THE UGLY

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 FM & Rock 98.5 FM)

IT’S TIME FOR ANOTHER EDITION OF THE GOOD, THE GREAT, AND THE UGLY, COMING OUT OF THE LAST WEEKEND OF OCTOBER.

THE GOOD – THE HEAT WAS GETTING HOT IN PATS-LAND BUT THE QUEEN CITY KIDS RESPONDED WITH A SWEEP OF SWIFT CURRENT WHICH SNAPPED A 7-GAME SLIDE AND TURNED THOSE FROWNS UPSIDE DOWN.

FRIDAY IN MOOSE JAW I SAW THE WARRIORS GET PAST THE MEDICINE HAT TIGERS 3-2 IN OVERTIME IN A WILDLY ENTERTAINING GAME. WE WERE ONLY LEFT TO WONDER – WHERE WERE ALL THE FANS?

THE GREAT – I WALKED INTO THE BRANDT CENTRE SATURDAY NIGHT WITH A YOUNG LADY WHO WAS CARRYING A HOCKEY BAG. FROM NEWS COVERAGE, SHE APPEARED TO BE WEYBURN’S ALEX CLARKE; THE FIRST FEMALE OFFICIAL IN WHL HISTORY.

SHE INFORMED ME THAT INDEED SHE WAS, AND THIS WAS HER FIRST GAME IN REGINA. I SAID, “WELCOME TO THE WHL.” SHE DID A FANTASTIC JOB.

THAT SAME NIGHT, ROD PEDERSEN SHOW INTERN OLIVIA LAWRENCE – THE PRIDE OF KENOSEE LAKE – MADE HER BROADCAST DEBUT DURING THAT PATS GAME.

SHE KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK AND EVEN GOT TO INTERVIEW CONNOR BEDARD. AFTER THE GAME SHE WAS WALKING ON AIR.

THAT’S GREAT ON BOTH COUNTS.

AND FINALLY THE UGLY – THE ROUGHRIDERS WON AN UGLY ONE, 19-14 AT MONTREAL ON SATURDAY NIGHT TO CLINCH A PLAYOFF SPOT.

PEOPLE ARE AGAIN PICKING APART THE PERFORMANCE (CODY FAJARDO ONLY THREW FOR 158 YARDS AND THEY GAVE UP SIX SACKS), BUT THEY FOUND A WAY TO WIN IN A TOUGH PLACE AGAINST A HOT TEAM.

THE RIDERS ARE 7-4 AND PRIMED TO HOST A PLAYOFF GAME IN A SEASON WHERE THEY’VE FACED AN AVALANCHE OF ADVERSITY.

I’D SAY IT’S NOT SO UGLY AT ALL.
