We cracked the lid on a brand new week, covering lots of topics and a lot of football on Episode #322 of The RP Show, Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod and Dupes kicked it off with The Warmup covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Rod offered condolences to the Ashe family and the Melfort Mustangs after Dylan Ashe was killed on the weekend, 2) Week 2 in the NFL – RP’s Cowboys and Dupes’ Titans won while Producer Clark’s Falcons lost, 3) The Russell Wilson/Cam Newton shootout and the Patriots’ shotgun formation on 3rd-and-goal from the Seahawks-1 to win the game (it failed), 4) Raptors playoff broadcasts smashed Stanley Cup Playoffs in Canadian TV ratings, 5) Dallas is up 1-0 over Tampa Bay in the Stanley Cup Final with Game 2 tonight, and 6) CFL SIM chaos on Friday Night Football as Calgary’s 19-16 OT win over Saskatchewan included a 12-on-12 brawl as time expired.
  • 10-year CFL’er Mike Abou-Mechrek joined the bunker in Segment 2 and gave his take on all these topics. He figured the Patriots made the right call with Newton, and we wouldn’t be talking about it if they’d converted. (However he didn’t like the empty backfield). News broke in the segment that ONE fan tested positive for Covid at the Texans/Chiefs game in Kansas City and Abou reasoned that one positive test out of 17,000 fans shouldn’t trigger a league-wide ban on fans attending NFL games. The Toronto product also talked about basketball’s rapidly-growing popularity among youth and New Canadians.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Are you watching the Stanley Cup Playoffs? Over 60% of respondents said no.
  • TSN 1260 Edmonton’s Dustin Nielson joined the show and said there is “zero buzz” in Edmonton regarding the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The morning show host said if it wasn’t for the televised broadcasts, Edmontonians wouldn’t even know the Stanley Cup will be handed out in their city. The long-time Detroit Lions fan said he’s wavering on his Lions loyalty given their 0-2 start and dreadful franchise history.
  • Hour 2 was broadcast on Facebook Live only and we were joined by Hamilton Tiger-Cats great and CEBL Commissioner Mike Morreale. Mike broke the news that the CEBL is eyeing Calgary as an expansion market and said the league is investigating which Calgary venue is best to host the team. Morreale revealed that an average attendance of 2,500 is enough to make the league viable. A hilarious moment in the interview came when Abou mistook Morreale for former Ticats safety Rob Hitchcock! Morreale also talked about basketball’s growing popularity in Canada and said the success of the Raptors has caused the sport to explode.
  • Former NFL/CFL offensive lineman Garrick Jones joined the show from Houston to explain his campaign to become General Manager of the Houston Texans. “The Commish” said there is growing unrest in Houston given the Texans 0-2 start and feels the culture of the team needs a radical change. Garrick and Abou played together in Winnipeg in 2002 and they told tales of their time together, playing for Dave Ritchie. Jones also runs the States Developmental Football League where he assists pro players in growing their brands off the field, and said it’s come in handy in pandemic times.
